Abreu Cappella 2015 (3x75cl)
Since purchasing his flagship Madrona Ranch in the 1980s, Abreu has acquired three more vineyards in the Howell Mountain district: Cappella, Thorevilos, and Las Posadas. Each has a stylistic variation that reflects its unique terroirs than winemaking techniques. Many (including Robert Parker) compare Abreu to Bordeaux First Growths. The Wine Advocate has given Abreu no less than eleven perfect 100 point scores (far eclipsing any single Bordeaux estate).
Not content with managing his own incredible vineyards, David has assisted planting and vine management at Screaming Eagle, Opus One, Dominus, Eisele and many others.
These wines are all what Californian’s call “proprietary reds”, usually containing at least 60-65% Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest largely Cabernet Franc with a little Petit Verdot and occasionally tiny amounts of Merlot.
The 2015 Cappella should be close to perfection when it is finally released in several years. Inky bluish/purple to the rim, with blackberry, chocolate, graphite, barbecue smoke and forest floor notes, this incredibly rich, pure, structured and powerful wine is multi-dimensional, with huge levels of fruit and glycerin. To say it is a tour de force is almost an understatement. It should have 30-50 years of longevity.

One rocking wine, the 2015 Cappella is a powerful, rich effort that has badass levels of black, black fruits, graphite, licorice, and crushed rocks. From a site on the west side of St. Helena and a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 13% Petit Verdot, it has a layered, multi-dimensional, stacked profile and is just loaded with glycerin and opulence. Feel free to drink this thriller any time over the coming 3 decades or more.

This is an extremely tight and fine-grained young red with spices, blackcurrants, berries and floral character, as well as black-tea and hazelnut undertones. Full-bodied and focused with a racy and linear finish. Hard to resist but one for the cellar. Drink in 2021.

David Abreu is one of a handful of legends that have shaped the face of Napa Valley’s first-class status, competing with the greatest wines in the world. As Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Advocate) says, "Abreu is a legend in his own time when it comes to vineyard management" and it shows. Since purchasing the flagship Madrona Ranch in the 1980’s, Abreu has acquired three more vineyards in the Howell Mountain district; Cappella, Thorevilos, and Las Posadas, each has stylistic variation that owes more to their unique terroirs than winemaking techniques. Many compare Abreu to Bordeaux First Growths including the Wine Advocate that has given them no less than eleven perfect scores.
