Blending the best of French savoir faire with the brilliant fruit purity and ripeness of Napa Valley, Moueix has turned in another tour de force that seems far superior today than it did when it was first released. This is one of the vintage’s greatest wines. Dense purple and youthful, with a glorious nose of earth, blackcurrants, sweet black cherries and incense, the oak is pushed way in the background, as it is in all of the Moueix wines, and the result is a wine of terroir, of great originality and authenticity. This full-bodied classic from Dominus can be drunk now, but really won’t hit its prime for another 4-5 years and last at least another two decades or more. |

Vinous (95+)(15.5% alcohol): Saturated bright red-ruby. Medicinal black cherry, blackberry, cocoa powder, tobacco, menthol and minerals on the remarkably primary nose. Seriously powerful, superconcentrated wine with a tightly coiled spring and a magically light touch. The dark berry and mineral flavors are complicated by a saline element. Conveys an impression of excellent acidity, but Woodbridge notes that the pH here is around 4.0; still, this wine makes the 2004 seem truffley by comparison. Finishes with a suave dusting of tannins and outstanding length. This was made in oak fermenters at Woodbridge's new winery, then aged in his caves. I'd still give it several years in the cellar to resolve its acids and tannins. It may yet merit an even higher score. |
