Angelus 2003 (6x75cl)
Exotic aromas of blackberries, cherries, spices and light coffee. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins. Goes on and on. A fabulous young wine. Beautiful. This is pure fruit-coated cashmere. Score range: 95-100

I had this wine from my cellar, as well as at a tasting in Zurich in February of 2015. It is one of the handful of 2003s I bought from the Right Bank of Bordeaux in this vintage. Angelus really nailed the vintage, and has produced a fully mature wine that’s truly strutting its stuff. Dense, bluish/purple, it offers gorgeous notes of espresso roast, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers and a touch of chocolate. It is full-bodied, opulent and seems close to full maturity, as it is evolving quickly. The wine is full-bodied, rich and should be drunk over the next decade.

Full medium ruby. Aromas of black raspberry, roasted redcurrant, bitter chocolate, game and flowers. Dense, full and broad, with a chocolatey ripeness leavened by a floral element. Extremely primary and sappy, with no lack of lift. But despite its impressive sweetness in the middle palate, this is a bit youthfully brutal today and not yet pliant. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins that reach the front teeth, and excellent length. This should be one of the top St. Emilions of the vintage but is rather austere today and will need a good eight to ten years to approach maturity.

A compelling nose of curry and dark fruits, with rose petal and tobacco undertones. Frankly, a wild nose. Full-bodied and racy, this has fine tannins and a round texture. Fresh herbs, berries, and currants on the palate open up to a fresh finish. Three more years will do this wine good. Pull the cork in 2013.

58% Cabernet Franc, had the most regal style, and 2003 produced 'unbelievable Cabernet Franc' according to Hubert. There was that kiss of modern vanilla, yet also an underlying style and the elegance of the earth. Hubert found 'red fruits and raspberries,' and there was also coffee, chocolate and cassis. The L'Angelus was much denser than the Cheval, with an extra touch of dryness to its finish. Big, rich and robust with a long, dry finish, the 2003 had lots of beefy flavors. It was not my style of wine but quite respectable

S'il n'est pas le plus ample ni le plus corsé du secteur, il apparaît superbement aromatique grâce à ses cabernets et très nuancé en milieu de bouche. Il devrait s'étoffer avec le temps.

89-91 A big, spicy wine with high toasty wood flavors. It's hard initially to find the fruit, but it is there, dark, heady and brooding.

Château Angelus is a Saint-Émilion Premier Cru Classé A. The estate has one of the longest histories in Saint-Émilion, dating back to 1782. Saint-Émilion itself was previously called 'Ascumbas'. It was renamed after the monk called Émilion, a travelling confessor, who settled in a hermitage carved into the rock there in the 8th century. The monks who followed him started up the commercial wine production in the area. Angelus is owned by the historic de Bouard family. It has a fanatical following in China, in part due to the label image of a golden bell. In China the wine is referred to as 'Kin Chung' (The Golden Bell). The wine has also been featured in James Bond films.
