Bright crimson purple. This is another wine with a bouquet that just sucks you in and envelops you. Dark fruit, grainy tannins, firm yet fine, with a succulent wealth of dark cherry to finish, and great persistence. Very good indeed, plenty of excitement here. Tasted: December 2021

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru has another quite intense bouquet with one of the best delineations among Arlaud’s Premier Crus: cranberry, red cherries and touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a fine layer of new oak neatly enmeshed with a controlled yet persistent finish. Excellent.

A markedly floral-suffused nose of elegant and exceptionally pretty red berries, cool spice and a whiff of earth give way to even sleeker and finer medium-bodied flavors that exude a bracing salinity on the lingering, balanced and equally harmonious finish. Like the Sentiers, the Combottes is almost always excellent, and it should be again in 2020. 2032+
