The Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio All'Oro comes from a single vineyard located to the north of Banfi’s castle. The vineyard includes some of the oldest vines in Banfi’s collection and the grapes for the Poggio All’Oro Riserva go through the most rigorous sorting process to produce around 2,500 cases. Only made in exceptional years, it is aged in a mixture of French oak casks and barriques for a minimum of 30 months and then spends more than a year ageing in bottle before it is released.
In the midst of the excellent 2013 Brunello vintage, the poweful estate of Banfi have made no mistake in producing a superb wine from their special Poggio All'Oro plot. Scoring 97 points from James Suckling & 96+ points from Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, this beautiful Brunello now has 9 years of maturity and has just entered its drinking window indicated by the Wine Advocate of 2021-2040.
Extremely complex aromas of cedar, mushroom and walnut highlighting the cherry and flowers. The palate is full and complete with ultra-fine and caressing tannins that are truly silky. It’s still very young, but shows beauty and seduction. Try after 2020.

I had tasted this as an unfinished product last year at the conclusion of a fascinating explorative tasting of wine from each of Banfi's single-vineyard parcels. With that background in mind, my impression of the Castello Banfi 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio all'Oro remains absolutely optimistic. This wine rocks clarity and intensity of aromas. Forest fruit and dried cherry mingle with powdered licorice and camphor ash. The mouthfeel is polished and glossy. The Riserva Poggio all'Oro is fermented in a combination of stainless steel and wood. Some 70% of the total ages in botte, and 30% goes into new French oak. This wine hit the market in October 2019. Some 15,200 bottles were produced.

Deep red-ruby. Fresh aromas of kirsch, cedar, orange peel and violet. Well delineated, multiflavored and relatively powerful, but with refined, precise flavors of red berries, cigar box, violet, and licorice. Offers an enticing combination of ripeness and acidity on the finely tannic, pliant and long finish. A very good showing, but in keeping with the slowly developing (very good) 2013 vintage, this wine is still youthfully imploded and will require plenty of bottle age before it will be fully open and ready to show it’s best.
