Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur - "A Trilogy of Excellence"

Having released his first batch of in-barrel scores, alongside broader commentary on the Bordeaux 2020 vintage, James Suckling has become the first major critic to declare 2020 “excellent”. The veteran taster’s initial impressions suggest that this is every bit the worthy successor to the rich, lush 2018 and the beautifully classical 2019.

Suckling’s tasting in Hong Kong saw him joined by the legendary consultant Michel Rolland via video, and the internationally celebrated winemaker provide fascinating insights into Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur. Rolland himself believes that 2018, 2019 and 2020 represent a new trilogy of outstanding years, similar in this respect to 1988, 1989 and 1990. We believe that the narrative of a “Trilogy of Excellence” for these three vintages (especially given the devastating reports regarding 2021) will be a highly compelling one. Collectors and investors should take note.

We have a reputation in Bordeaux to say the last vintage is the best one...But we did 2018, 2019 and now 2020 … after we did our tastings in the Spring I can say it is a really great vintage. It is different than 2019 with more freshness, more tension, more balance. It’s a good one. Maybe a bit less powerful than 2019 but it made really great wine. I think that we can call it a trilogy now [three consecutive high-quality vintages: 2018, 2019 and 2020].

The 2020 Branaire-Ducru is utterly magnificent. A wine of extraordinary depth and dimension, the 2020 possesses tremendous intensity right out of the gate. Concentrated, chiselled and juicy, this has clear personality and equals the great, classically balanced vintages of Calon like 2016. A yield of 33hl/ha, 3.85pH, 100% new oak. Lots of blue fruits, leafy herbs, chocolate, and earthy goodness emerge from the 2020 Château Canon-La-Gaffeliere, a medium to full-bodied, dense, focused, elegant Saint-Emilion that needs plenty of air to show at its best. The purity of fruit is remarkable, and while it starts out tight and focused, it blossoms with air, showing a more expansive, layered, rich yet still fresh texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. The wine feels full of life, with acidity that pulls the palate forward from the first moment, before austerity kicks in on the finish and closes things in, suggesting an extremely long life ahead. Hard to argue with this. Could go up after tasting in bottle, a potential 100 points.

The 2020 Château de Pez is one of the more aromatically fruit-driven Saint-Estèphes, presenting a nose of black cherries, raspberry and light blueberry scents, and hints of cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and real salinity and precision. A slightly powdery-textured, quite mineral-driven finish completes this superb de Pez. Possibly one of the best buys out there, the 2020 Château Laroque comes from a cooler, clay and limestone terroir on the eastern side of the appellation, and this is exactly what you wanted in this vintage. Revealing a vivid purple hue as well as stunning notes of blueberries, cassis, liquid violets, and white truffle, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture, and gorgeous length on the finish. It plays in the more nuanced, elegant end of the spectrum yet still brings ample fruit, richness, and texture. It’s a stunning bottle of wine all about finesse and elegance. Tasted twice.

Chocolate, liquorice, some bitter points that accompany the fruit from beginning to end, this is one of the best in terms of focus and precision. There is clearly excellent colour extraction, you get real glass-staining purple, but the flavours are more austere and tannic than the colour might suggest. Well chosen coffee and chocolate expression that remains elegant and pointed. Good stuff, needs time, but will grow into a classic elegant wine. A yield of 38hl/ha.

Jeb Dunnuck (92-94)

The 2020 Clos René showed beautifully, with a pure, elegant style offering lots of cassis and black cherry fruits as well as notes of Christmas spice, flowers, and cedar. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe, present tannins, it's very much in the style of this ripe yet fresh, lively vintage.

De Pez 2020 (12x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Château de Pez is one of the more aromatically fruit-driven Saint-Estèphes, presenting a nose of black cherries, raspberry and light blueberry scents, and hints of cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and real salinity and precision. A slightly powdery-textured, quite mineral-driven finish completes this superb de Pez. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Decanter (89)

This is a little tight on the opening, bright fruit running underneath but clear austerity to the tannins, and touches of tobacco leaf and redcurrant fruits that feel a little strained. Enjoyable coffee smoke as it opens, and there is delicacy. First year of conversion to organic farming. Harvest September 14 to October 1.

This is really fantastic with so much intensity and focus. Firm, linear tannins frame the wine beautifully. Polished and fine. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and posed. Complex flavors of blackberry, black olive, mushroom and bark. Persistent finish. Best of the trilogy?

Laroque 2020 (12x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (95-97)

Larrivet Haut-Brion 2020 (12x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (93-95)

Lots of blue fruits, spring flowers, candied orange, and exotic fruit notes emerge from the 2020 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, floral, exotic, incredibly pure wine that opens up nicely with time in the glass. Possessing bright tannins, good overall concentration, and exceptional balance, this beautiful Pessac-Léognan will require just 4-5 years of bottle age to be drinkable and cruise for two decades.

Latour-Martillac 2020 (12x75cl)

Decanter (94)

Chocolate, liquorice, some bitter points that accompany the fruit from beginning to end, this is one of the best in terms of focus and precision. There is clearly excellent colour extraction, you get real glass-staining purple, but the flavours are more austere and tannic than the colour might suggest. Well chosen coffee and chocolate expression that remains elegant and pointed. Good stuff, needs time, but will grow into a classic elegant wine. A yield of 38hl/ha.

Malartic Lagraviere 2020 (12x75cl)

Vinous (NM) (94-96)

The 2020 Malartic Lagravière, whose picking was completed on September 24, before the rains, has a bright, vivid nose of mineral-infused red fruit mixed with hints of blueberry and cassis. Very focused and precise, this is an aromatically sophisticated Pessac-Léognan. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-tinged black fruit, hints of wild mint coming through, and lively and tensile toward the finish. This is one of the best vintages of Malartic Lagravière that I have encountered out of bottle. Ignore at your peril.
