Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur - "A Trilogy of Excellence"

Having released his first batch of in-barrel scores, alongside broader commentary on the Bordeaux 2020 vintage, James Suckling has become the first major critic to declare 2020 “excellent”. The veteran taster’s initial impressions suggest that this is every bit the worthy successor to the rich, lush 2018 and the beautifully classical 2019.

Suckling’s tasting in Hong Kong saw him joined by the legendary consultant Michel Rolland via video, and the internationally celebrated winemaker provide fascinating insights into Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur. Rolland himself believes that 2018, 2019 and 2020 represent a new trilogy of outstanding years, similar in this respect to 1988, 1989 and 1990. We believe that the narrative of a “Trilogy of Excellence” for these three vintages (especially given the devastating reports regarding 2021) will be a highly compelling one. Collectors and investors should take note.

We have a reputation in Bordeaux to say the last vintage is the best one...But we did 2018, 2019 and now 2020 … after we did our tastings in the Spring I can say it is a really great vintage. It is different than 2019 with more freshness, more tension, more balance. It’s a good one. Maybe a bit less powerful than 2019 but it made really great wine. I think that we can call it a trilogy now [three consecutive high-quality vintages: 2018, 2019 and 2020].

James Suckling (94-95)

This is classically structured with a wonderful finish of extremely polished tannins and an ultra long finish. So much blackcurrant, spice and cedar. Seamless. 70% cabernet sauvignon and 26% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot.

Calon Segur 2020 (3x150cl)

Decanter (98)

A return to form in my eyes for Calon Ségur after the atypical 2018, rippling with elegance, balance and savoury blue fruits of Cabernet, with rose and peony flowers. Concentrated, chiselled and juicy, this has clear personality and equals the great, classically balanced vintages of Calon like 2016. A yield of 33hl/ha, 3.85pH, 100% new oak. Vincent Millet is now overall director as well as technical director, since the departure of Laurent Dufau in 2020.

Cheval Blanc 2020 (3x150cl)

Decanter (98)

Spice, anis, rosemary, blackcurrant leaf, redcurrants, mint, peonies, the full array of aromatics are on display here, and there is an enveloping aspect to the fruit once you get to the body of the wine. The tannins are compact and powerful but they are wrapped in plump raspberry and blackberry brambled fruits. The wine feels full of life, with acidity that pulls the palate forward from the first moment, before austerity kicks in on the finish and closes things in, suggesting an extremely long life ahead. Hard to argue with this. Could go up after tasting in bottle, a potential 100 points.

James Suckling (97-98)

This is a very refined, polished Cos with superb finesse and length. Medium-to full-bodied, very fine and persistent. Really long with beautiful tannins. Rich, but fresh and linear. Yet, the alcohol is around 13.5%. 62% cabernet and 38% merlot.

Feytit-Clinet 2020 (3x150cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (96-98)

Another blockbuster in the making from this tiny estate in Pomerol, the 2020 Château Feytit-Clinet is based on a normal blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, hitting 14.8% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.7. The aging will span 18 months in 70% new French oak. It boasts a dense purple hue as well as a stunning nose of crème de cassis, currants, tobacco, and damp earth. About as ripe, sexy, and opulent as they come, it still shows the purity and freshness of this great vintage. It reveals more and more tannins with time in the glass, but given its mid-palate as well as its overall density, it’s going to benefit from just 3-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 20-30 years.

Petit Figeac 2020 (3x150cl)

2020

Petit Figeac 2020 (3x150cl) Unlike many other Bordeaux second wines, Petit Figeac is a micro-cuvée coming from some of Château Figeac’s best parcels (albeit younger vines). It is crafted to be a stylistic introduction to Figeac itself, and only around 40,000 bottles are filled each year. As the vineyard has been replanted since 2009, a lot of the newer parcels have been going into Petit Figeac, which is why its quality has risen so much over the past decade.

Pichon Lalande 2020 (3x150cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (98-100)

An estate that has been on fire of late, the 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is another brilliant wine in a succession of brilliant wines. Revealing a dense purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of blac currants, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and violets, it hits the palate with an expansive, rich, yet pure, precise texture that carries fabulous tannins, perfect balance, and a stacked mid-palate. Based on 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc, it's an incredible wine that's going to flirt with perfection and is unquestionably one of the finest, if not the finest, Left Banks in the vintage. Bravo. Tasted twice.
