Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur - "A Trilogy of Excellence"

Having released his first batch of in-barrel scores, alongside broader commentary on the Bordeaux 2020 vintage, James Suckling has become the first major critic to declare 2020 “excellent”. The veteran taster’s initial impressions suggest that this is every bit the worthy successor to the rich, lush 2018 and the beautifully classical 2019.

Suckling’s tasting in Hong Kong saw him joined by the legendary consultant Michel Rolland via video, and the internationally celebrated winemaker provide fascinating insights into Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur. Rolland himself believes that 2018, 2019 and 2020 represent a new trilogy of outstanding years, similar in this respect to 1988, 1989 and 1990. We believe that the narrative of a “Trilogy of Excellence” for these three vintages (especially given the devastating reports regarding 2021) will be a highly compelling one. Collectors and investors should take note.

We have a reputation in Bordeaux to say the last vintage is the best one...But we did 2018, 2019 and now 2020 … after we did our tastings in the Spring I can say it is a really great vintage. It is different than 2019 with more freshness, more tension, more balance. It’s a good one. Maybe a bit less powerful than 2019 but it made really great wine. I think that we can call it a trilogy now [three consecutive high-quality vintages: 2018, 2019 and 2020].

Croix de Labrie 2020 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (98-99)

The focus and texture of this wine is really something. It’s totally transparent with blackberries, blueberries, earth, stone and mushrooms. Flowers too. Full-bodied with firm tannins that give super form and length to this. Freshness. Almost all merlot with a tiny dash of cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. Perhaps the best ever? Certainly at the same level as the 2019. About 14,000 bottles made.

The Wine Cellar Insider (97-99)

Richly-textured, sensuous and silky, the wine opens with flowers, licorice, plums, spice box, roasted nuts and black, red and blue fruits. Opulent, fresh, long and velvety, the wine is refined, complex and concentrated. The fruit coats your palate, yet retains its freshness, lift, elegance and purity. The over 50 second finish leaves you with layers of vibrant, black and red fruits, savory herbs, minerality and spicy cocoa. This remains one of the new stars of St. Emilion and is a wine to follow before prices jump. The wine blends 84% Merlot with 16% Cabernet Franc, 14.8% ABV, pH 3.52.

Magrez Fombrauge 2020 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)

Another rock star of a Saint-Emilion, the 2020 Château Magrez Fombrauge just about jumps from the glass with a great perfume of assorted cassis and darker berry fruits as well spice and floral aromatics. It’s certainly ripe, yet it never goes over the top, and it holds onto the sense of freshness and vibrancy that’s common in 2020. With medium to full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and terrific depth, it plays in the upper echelons in the vintage and is well worth seeking out. I think it will offer plenty of pleasure in its youth yet also cruise in the cellar.
