Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur - a "New Classicism"?

After a trio of excellent warm, dry vintages in Bordeaux, where most producers and appellations did very well across the board, 2021 was less straightforward for the vignerons of the world’s most famous wine region. Pressures from frost and mildew were the complications that tested some Chateaux’s resolve but nevertheless, the 2021 growing season has created what Decanter’s Georgie Hindle believes to be ‘one of the most interesting and talked about vintages of recent times.’

Generalising is a difficult thing to do in 2021 Bordeaux but if we were forced, we’d say that the vintage has yielded elegant & classically proportioned wines. Many have moderate alcohol levels, think 12-13.5 % rather than the loft heights of 14.5-15%, whilst they also have more supple, charming profiles more in line with the great Bordeaux wines of the 80s and 90s than the recent blockbuster vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020. It is in vintages like 2021 where we really appreciate the pedigree and winemaking knowledge of the very best properties within this majestic region– with all the modern science, technology and investment now behind these great estates, it is hard for them to make anything other than beautiful wine.

Don't miss the whites of 2021 as they have been universally praised and were a joy to taste. The cool conditions of 2021 have certainly created the ‘finest set of dry whites since 2017’ that ‘exhibit considerable potential’ (WA).

Cantemerle 2021 (6x150cl)

Decanter (91)

Allspice, cedar, juniper and blackcurrants - a heady, appealing perfume. Lightly framed with gentle but mouthwatering and succulent red berry fruits mingling with firm tannins that coat the mouth in a fine layer of chalky, fruity saltiness. Attractive balance, if a little light on the mid-palate at this point, but this has a long finish and a motion of flavour from beginning to end. It feels well worked with concentration and direction. Structured and confident.

The Drinks Business (93-95)

Cantenac Brown (Margaux; 73% Cabernet Sauvignon; 27% Merlot; aging in oak barrels, 60% of which are new; tasted at the UGCB press tasting). Very classy and elegant on the nose, with a seductive gentle suggestion of oak influence – vanilla and sweet spice, but all very restrained. Graphite, walnut skin and a delightful hint of the cedar to come. Deep rich berry fruit, with pleasing floral elements (more than I recall in recent vintages) – lily and peony. Pure, precise, fresh and focussed with good if not massive concentration and lovely balance and harmony. Excellent wine-making is on display here with a series of pitch perfect choices that reinforce the identity and terroir typicity of this exciting wine.

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (96)

This vintage, which can be overly straight and austere, benefits from the house style of Cos, where they are happy to add a twist of gourmet glamour, and I am seriously impressed with this wine. It showcases the successful sides of a cool vintage in spades, with bitter black chocolate, cool blue fruits, lemongrass and turmeric and black pepper spices. 55% new oak. 3.79ph. 53% of overall production is for the 1st wine, the rest in Pagodes. Gazin 2021 (6x150cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93+)

The 2021 Gazin is a fine effort, unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, plums, incense and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's rather rich and elegantly muscular in the context of the vintage, with a deep core of fruit, powdery tannins and bright acids. Mildew pressure combined with wet conditions that made it impossible to enter the vineyard with tractors delivered low yields of only 18 hectoliters per hectare, and the grand vin is entirely Merlot this year.

Cabernet Sauvignon takes the leading role in the 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte. This super-classic Graves is not especially forthcoming today, but that should not be an issue in time. Palmer (Margaux; 56% Merlot, 41%Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot; aging in oak barrels, 70% of which are new; a final yield of just 22hl/ha; 13.5% alcohol; tasted at the property). A very exciting wine and a rare exception to the left-bank rule in this vintage that the more Merlot in the blend the more difficult the wine is. For what makes this great is the Merlot. As with Alter Ego, this starts promisingly with a pleasing natural ripe sweetness on the nose that is reflected on the plate. The intensity of the dense yet vibrant fruit is fabulously impressive. Wow! A kaleidoscope of colour. Black, purple and lots of vivid red berry fruit – raspberry and loganberry purée – plump mulberries and brambles too. This has impressive volume for the vintage and quite a bold structure. Yet the frame is amply and in fact densely covered and there is no dip in the fruit intensity. There is also a lovely salinity and creaminess to the mid-palate. But what is perhaps most exciting about this wine is the way in which the sapidity and the salinity work together. For they seem to combine to produce little vertical fireworks of vibrant fruitiness, discharging biodynamic explosions of fresh juiciness at the top of the palate. Spectacular and refreshing in equal measure!

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (93)

Touches of grated ginger, this is fresh, powerful and intense, with slate, white pear and apricot, stretches out through the palate, great quality. Tasted twice.

Latour-Martillac Blanc 2021 (6x150cl)

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2021 Latour-Martillac Blanc has a knockout nose with apple blossom, nettle, wet pavement and citrus peel aromas. Real energy here. The palate is well balanced with fine concentration, taut and fresh with plenty of extract, touches of spice emerge towards the finish. Excellent.

Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2021 (6x150cl)

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91-93)

Cabernet Sauvignon takes the leading role in the 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte. This super-classic Graves is not especially forthcoming today, but that should not be an issue in time. Graphite, dried herbs, spice and menthol open with a bit of coaxing, with pretty floral top notes that appear with some aeration. A long, persistent finish rounds things out in style.

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2021 (6x150cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (91-93)

The 2021 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron offers more purity and focus, as well as a touch more precision. Based on 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, it has gorgeous Cabernet cassis and blue fruits supported by notes of charcoal, chocolate, and graphite. Still aging in 40% new barrels, it stays straight and compact on the palate, has good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's a beautiful wine in the making.

Palmer 2021 (6x150cl)

The Drinks Business (95-97+)
