2021 |
Beychevelle 2021 (6x75cl) The Drinks Business (94-96)Beychevelle (St Julien; 57% Cabernet Sauvignon; 38% Merlot; 3% Petit Verdot; 2% Cabernet Franc; 13% alcohol; tasted at the UGCB press tasting and at Lagrange with consistent notes). Dark, glossy and viscous in the glass, with a radiant lilac/pink rim and with good extraction (which, with Beychevelle, you know already is going to be well managed). Chocolate fondant; deep dark bramble compote; graphite and cedar (all very Beychevelle); plump ripe raspberries and freshly hulled wild strawberries; toasted brioche with melted butter. Lovely, with a beautiful vertical lift from the redcurrant and blackcurrant leafiness. Texturally sublime and a little more precise even than usual. Tight, compact, dense and charged with energy and life. Sapid and juicy. Fabulously successful in a challenging vintage

2021 |
Blanc de Lynch Bages 2021 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)I was blown away by the quality of the 2021 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc, which ranks with the top whites in the vintage. Offering awesome white grapefruit, floral, mint, and chalky notes, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a vivid, pure, chiseled mouthfeel, and a great finish. I'd be a buyer.

Bouscaut 2021 (6x75cl)
|
2021 |
Bouscaut 2021 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (16.5)Dark, glowing crimson. Quite a rich, ripe nose. Suave palate with sufficient fruit (I wonder why their Merlot did so well?) and yet some bordeaux rigidity. Bone dry! Classic build that will always need food but the structure is fine. It’s just a little lacking density.

Bouscaut Blanc 2021 (6x75cl)
|
2021 |
Bouscaut Blanc 2021 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17)Still a little cloudy, suggesting lees ageing. Really exciting energy, masses of ripe fruit and a top note of light struck-match character. Very long. Bouscaut does it again with its white wine! Sherbet and savour – more complex than many dry white bordeaux. Still a bit of chew on the end.

Brane-Cantenac 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (AG) (93-96)The 2021 Brane-Cantenac notably marries fruit intensity with energy and structure. There is an exotic richness to the 2021 that is impossible to miss. Kirsch, red plum, blood orange, cinnamon, new leather and spice all meld together. The 2021 is bold, sumptuous and alluring. There is certainly a lot to look forward to. The oak needs to fully integrate, but that is what élevage is for. Brane-Cantenac was impressive on both occasions I tasted it.

Calon Segur 2021 (12x75cl)
|
2021 |
Calon Segur 2021 (12x75cl) Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2021 Calon Ségur was cropped at 36hL/ha and aged entirely in new oak for a planned 20 months. This year, the gap between the Grand Vin and the Marquis is blatantly obvious, to the extent that they are practically different wines, which is how Vincent Millet and his team treat them. The Cabernet is firmly in the driving seat here, with detailed, graphite-infused black fruit and a background florality that comes through with aeration. The medium-bodied palate displays very fine tannins, superb acidity (pH 3.65) and impressive harmony. This has exemplary build in the mouth, fine weight on the finish and a persistent aftertaste. An outstanding Calon-Ségur, elevated by the risks taken in de-leafing in June and waiting to pick. Bravo. 12.9% alcohol

Cantemerle 2021 (6x150cl)
|
2021 |
Cantemerle 2021 (6x150cl) Decanter (91)Allspice, cedar, juniper and blackcurrants - a heady, appealing perfume. Lightly framed with gentle but mouthwatering and succulent red berry fruits mingling with firm tannins that coat the mouth in a fine layer of chalky, fruity saltiness. Attractive balance, if a little light on the mid-palate at this point, but this has a long finish and a motion of flavour from beginning to end. It feels well worked with concentration and direction. Structured and confident.

Cantenac Brown 2021 (12x75cl) The Drinks Business (93-95)Cantenac Brown (Margaux; 73% Cabernet Sauvignon; 27% Merlot; aging in oak barrels, 60% of which are new; tasted at the UGCB press tasting). Very classy and elegant on the nose, with a seductive gentle suggestion of oak influence – vanilla and sweet spice, but all very restrained. Graphite, walnut skin and a delightful hint of the cedar to come. Deep rich berry fruit, with pleasing floral elements (more than I recall in recent vintages) – lily and peony. Pure, precise, fresh and focussed with good if not massive concentration and lovely balance and harmony. Excellent wine-making is on display here with a series of pitch perfect choices that reinforce the identity and terroir typicity of this exciting wine.
