Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur - a "New Classicism"?

After a trio of excellent warm, dry vintages in Bordeaux, where most producers and appellations did very well across the board, 2021 was less straightforward for the vignerons of the world’s most famous wine region. Pressures from frost and mildew were the complications that tested some Chateaux’s resolve but nevertheless, the 2021 growing season has created what Decanter’s Georgie Hindle believes to be ‘one of the most interesting and talked about vintages of recent times.’

Generalising is a difficult thing to do in 2021 Bordeaux but if we were forced, we’d say that the vintage has yielded elegant & classically proportioned wines. Many have moderate alcohol levels, think 12-13.5 % rather than the loft heights of 14.5-15%, whilst they also have more supple, charming profiles more in line with the great Bordeaux wines of the 80s and 90s than the recent blockbuster vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020. It is in vintages like 2021 where we really appreciate the pedigree and winemaking knowledge of the very best properties within this majestic region– with all the modern science, technology and investment now behind these great estates, it is hard for them to make anything other than beautiful wine.

Don't miss the whites of 2021 as they have been universally praised and were a joy to taste. The cool conditions of 2021 have certainly created the ‘finest set of dry whites since 2017’ that ‘exhibit considerable potential’ (WA).

Dauzac (Margaux; 70% Cabernet Sauvignon; 30% Merlot; 13% alcohol; a final yield of 44 hl/ha; aged predominantly in oak barrels, 65% of which are new, with a small proportion in amphora; tasted at the property and the UGCB press tasting). Complex and enticing on the nose, with plenty of Margaux florality – wisteria, violets and lavender – combined with a distinct saline-ferrous minerality and a rich, deep, dark berry and stone fruit. The palate is limpid and lithe with delicate layering that is not obscured thanks to the judicious restraint in the extraction. There is an impressive natural ripe sweetness to the fruit and a gentle smokiness too. Nicely composed and very promising.

De Fieuzal 2021 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2021 de Fieuzal Blanc shows considerable potential, unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp nectarine, mint, pasty cream, citrus oil and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and tensile, with tangy acids, chalky dry extract and a long, saline finish, it will be bottled under Diam 30. This Sauvignon Blanc-Sémillon blend is rapidly establishing itself as one of Bordeaux's most interesting dry white wines. Tasted three times.

Jeb Dunnuck (92-94)

The 2021 Château De Fieuzal Blanc (65% Sauvignon and 35% Semillon) is terrific and shows the quality of the vintage. Giving up ripe tropical and melon fruits as well as notes of honeyed flowers and chalky, mineral-like nuances, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a bright, vibrant, chiseled texture, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and well worth seeking out.

De Pez 2021 (12x37.5cl)

Jancis Robinson (17)

Rather sumptuous nose. Fleshy, almost sweet – certainly many steps taken to ensure this is not too austere. Good drive and excellent delivery of ripe fruit. Underneath there is the stoniness of the appellation and I assume that Montrose, for example, is more concentrated and will live longer but this is a pretty successful wine. Fresh, long finish. Good stuff! Very nicely balanced.

Gunsmoke opener, followed by structured white peach, pear, sage, crushed rocks, green apple, pummice stone slate and liquourice bud, with a squeeze of sweeter citrus pureee as it opens up in the mid palate. James Suckling (95-96)

A very fine yet structured d’Issan with blackcurrant and plum, as well as spice and walnuts. The palate is full and structured with wonderful tannins and length. It really grows on the palate. Serious balance of ripe and fine tannins with pretty fruit and a citrusy undertone. This could move up a notch. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 2% cabernet franc, 2% malbec and 1% petit verdot.

Jancis Robinson (16.5+)

Cask sample. Roasted coffee and violets, cocoa and crushed blackberries. A rich and rounded palate, nicely structured with firm, detailed tannins and excellent freshness. Not hugely concentrated but very enjoyable and promising.

Dassault 2021 (6x75cl)

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (91-93)

The 2021 Dassault is very, very good. Dark and ample, the 2021 possesses terrific depth and fine balance at this stage. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, mint, spice, tobacco and mocha are nicely pushed forward. This succulent yet mid-weight Saint-Émilion has a ton to offer.

Dauzac 2021 (6x75cl)

The Drinks Business (91-93)

The 2021 Doisy-Daëne is fabulous. Sweet floral notes, orchard fruit, mint and passionfruit all lend notable flavor intensity. The 2021 is rich and unctuous, but not at all heavy. It is a fabulous example of both the château and vintage.

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (96)

Les Champs Libres hits it out of the park in 2021. Gunsmoke opener, followed by structured white peach, pear, sage, crushed rocks, green apple, pummice stone slate and liquourice bud, with a squeeze of sweeter citrus pureee as it opens up in the mid palate. A truly great white that doesn't try too hard to impress, and is content to take its time. Savoury, mouthwatering, delicious. Harvest September 9 to 11. 100% aged in barrels.
