Bordeaux 2022 will be remembered as yet another year of significant climatic challenge and masterful viticultural response. Following our tastings and meetings in Bordeaux, we can say with confidence that there were several outstanding wines produced in Bordeaux during 2022. Like 2021 before it, 2022 was characterised by some extreme weather events. This time, it was intense sunlight and drought-like conditions that challenged the estates. In the modern era of Bordeaux, understanding of terroir, vineyard management and winemaking skill of the great and the good of the region can adapt to climatic challenges like never before. It is because of this that growing seasons such as 2022 can produce such an array of magical wines – where previously these weather events could have proved problematic, today they are embraced and managed with deft skill by the finest Châteaux in the region.

Lots of energy this year despite the hot and dry growing season. 67% sauvignon blanc, 22% semillon and 11% muscadelle. Drinking beautifully already. More Info

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (93) One to look out for, with juicy uplift and white flower blossom aromatics, a ton of supple textured white peach fruits, with a kick of lime zest and bitter lemon curd. Great quality, impressive reflection of the excellent white terroir at this estate. 30hl/h yield. More Info

James Suckling (97-98) This is so umami with sea urchin character that gives you sea salt and dried seaweed aromas and flavors. The integrity and richness is so impressive with an exotic character, yet it is so classic and fine in structure. 13.5% alcohol. 70% whole cluster fermentation. 40% cabernet franc, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 25% merlot. Antonio Galloni - Vinous (93-96) The 2022 Clos Haut-Peyraguey is laced with scents of tangerine oil, mint, white flowers and ripe green pear. Creamy and unctuous, but not at all heavy, the 2022 is showing beautifully today. All the elements are so well balanced in this classy, understated Sauternes from Bernard Magrez. Yields were just 9 hectoliters per hectare. Tasted two times. More Info

Wine Advocate (93-95) A blend of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Sémillon, the 2022 de Fieuzal Blanc exhibits aromas of spring flowers, lemon oil, al dente pear and peach with flinty hints. Juicy, round and deep, fleshy and fresh with a medium to full-bodied palate, it has a slightly phenolic finish. The aging process should reduce the slight austerity and bring more flesh and substance. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Doisy-Daëne has an intense bouquet that blossoms in the glass: dried honey, quince and honeysuckle, with light saffron scents emerging with time. The palate is brimming with tension, razor-sharp acidity, quince and tangerine, leading to a slightly peachy, vivacious finish. What a wonderful "DD" from Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu. More Info

The Wine Cellar Insider (94-96) The first vintage with Sandrine Garaby, formerly of Chateau d'Yquem in charge is the winner you knew it would be. The wine is intense, rich, deep, and manages to balance its layers of roasted, ripe, and over ripe pineapples, mango, candied orange, vanilla, almond, and apricots perfectly. The fruits are slathered with honey, yet they retain that all important freshness as well. Drink from 2025-2050. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (96-98) The 2022 L'Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne, pure Sémillon as usual, is deceptively backward on the nose. The action is on the palate: unctuous honeyed fruit counterbalanced by fine acidity, extremely pure with layers of wild peach, apricot, figs and marmalade on the long finish. Despite its power, it comes across with tenderness and grace. Chapeau Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu. It's outrageous in all the best ways. More Info
