Wine Advocate (80)The 1988 may need 20 years to reach its peak, as it is probably the most tannic, young Ausone I have ever tasted. The tannins are extremely hard, even astringent, but unlike a number of 1988s where the balance between tannins and fruit favors the tannin (always a troubling sign), here is a case where there is plenty of juicy red and black fruit extract in a medium-bodied, superbly concentrated, very intense and powerful wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2040. Last tasted, 4/93. |

Wine Spectator (92)Youthful and vigorous beneath a polished surface, offering beautifully modulated currant, blackberry and chocolate flavors that resonate on the finish. The tannins are not obtrusive, allowing the flavors to ring true. Should develop well with cellaring through 1996 to '98. |

Wine Spectator (96)What a beautiful and complete wine, with dark chocolate, crushed blackberry, cedar and raspberry on the nose. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a beautiful licorice, tar and fruit aftertaste. Long and complex. Will improve with age, but delicious now. |

Wine Advocate (90)Firm, masculine and tannic with plenty of earth, truffle, asphalt and volcanic characteristics, this burly La Mission-Haut-Brion is bordering on being monolithic/foursquare. It reveals good body as well as plenty of tannin, adequate acidity, a dark plum/garnet color, and classic La Mission terroir characteristics of smoke, scorched earth, spice, roasted meats and camphor. Neither big nor wimpish, it, like many wines of this vintage, appears to be aging nicely. While fully mature, it displays enough youthful characteristics, from its tannin to its vibrant, moderately intense fruit, to suggest it will hold up for another two decades. |

Decanter (96)This 1988 is still youthful with chewy tannins and a menthol send off. It's full of rich, concentrated spice, cloves and cinnamon touches and is holding up extremely well. It's a little more evolved than the 1986 but still shows just how regularly Las Cases rewards the faith that people have in it. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Drinking Window 2019 – 2030 |

James Suckling (93)There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood. |

Wine Spectator (96)A definition of finesse. So opulent and seductive that the smoothness and delicacy of the texture come almost as a surprise. Explosive blackberry, currant, plum and vanilla aromas are only the beginning, and the subtle echoes of fruit and spice carry over on the featherlight finish. Tannins are beautifully integrated. Should keep improving past 2000. 16,000 cases made. |
