Wine Advocate (82)

This medium ruby wine remains closed, but exhibits adequate ripeness of fruit. However, the hard tannins are cause for concern. The 1981 Ausone is a medium-weight wine, with good concentration, but I believe it will always be an austere, tough-textured, charmless wine. It still needs 10 years to soften and develop. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010. Last tasted, 1/90.

Wine Advocate (89)

This somewhat charming, lightweight Cheval Blanc is fully mature but elegant, with sweet red and black currant fruit intermixed with mineral, licorice, and a hint of herbs. Spicy, medium-bodied, and very pleasant, this wine’s harmony gives it considerable appeal. Drink up. Last tasted, 11/02.

Wine Advocate (90)

The 1981 exhibits a more youthful purple hue to its dark plum color than any vintage back to 1970. Somewhat narrowly constructed for a La Mission-Haut-Brion, it reveals plenty of incense, blueberry, black currant and crushed rock notes intertwined with a restrained, smoky character. The wine is medium-bodied, fresh and crisp with good concentration as well as a surprising youthfulness. However, the vintage’s deficiencies – a lack of heat and maturity – show up in the wine’s modest power and concentration. The 1981 does not possess the great richness, depth and intensity of the finest vintages, but it is still an outstanding effort that has aged extremely well. It could hold up for another two decades, but there is no point in deferring gratification.

Emitting a sublime allure, the Latour a Pomerol 1981 is a magnificently matured Merlot offering from the Bordeaux region of France. Cultivated by the venerable Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix vineyard, this venerated vintage exhibits an opulent blend of black fruit and truffle, underpinned by tertiary notes of cigar box and forest floor. Ageing in French oak barrels, extended maceration, and meticulous selection have lent this wine an inimitable structure and a peerless depth of flavour. The vineyards' clay and gravel soils endow the Latour a Pomerol 1981 with an exceptional minerality and refined tannins. Elegantly faded, this expressive, earthy pour breathes expansive charm, epitomising the splendour of its era and the sophistication of Pomerol's unique terroir. This is the epitome of a fine collector's wine that masterfully evokes the charm of its vintage. Undeniably, a bottle of Latour a Pomerol 1981 is testament to the immortal allure of Pomerol's vineyards.

Wine Advocate (84)

This medium-bodied wine has an attractive spicy, black currant fruitiness, melted tannin, and a decent finish. The 1981 is a good wine, but it lacks excitement and is clearly outdistanced by several other St.-Juliens in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 2/89.

Wine Advocate (80)

Here is an example of a wine that had a lovely, perfumed, soft, berry bouquet, and moderately intense flavors, yet because of extensive oak aging, now tastes hard, astringent, tannic, and deficient in fruit. The color is very sound, the bouquet suggests vanillin, woodsy aromas, but on the palate, the wine is unyielding and ungenerous. Perhaps time will unleash the fruit. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 3/87.

Savour the complexity of the Meyney 1981, a riveting vintage from the storied Chateau Meyney of Bordeaux's Saint Estèphe region. As a distinguished Bordeaux Superieur, this wine exudes the meticulosity of the winemaking process. The vineyard, established in the 17th century, boasts a remarkable location next to the river Gironde, leading to a unique terroir that damasks itself into layers of flavour.

The Meyney 1981 reveals its age through pronounced tannins and a striking boldness on the palate. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, the wine offers a nod to tradition while expressing individuality. Expect notes of ripe fruit, truffle, and tobacco, elegantly underpinned by a subtle touch of oak from 18 months in French barrels.

An embodiment of Chateau Meyney's commitment to excellence, the Meyney 1981 remains a testament to the enduring appeal of fine Bordeaux wines.
