Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, one of the last to be picked over three different passes, has a plush and expressive bouquet with dark cherries, raspberry coulis and light violet petal aromas that recede and reveal orange rind and yuzu scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip on the entry. It’s a solid Charmes-Chambertin that is Mazoyères in style because, well, that's where it's from! A serious Charmes-Chambertin that will age well in bottle. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Mid to deep crimson. Cooked strawberries on the nose. Not really cooked, crushed and peppery really. 50% whole bunches can be seen as well as the limestone aspect of the top of the hill. Almost floral, aiming at a more elegant style rather than a massive one, given the situation. But a very long finish. I was also shown an amphora version of the Corton which had a mid-crimson colour, with a dark raspberry and crushed strawberry nose. Like the Clos de la Mousse, the amphora version comes across as a bit gravelly, the tannins a little more pronounced. Scored for the main version. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. Decanter (96) This delicious white Corton has an almost Montrachet-like richness and depth of flavour, with its aromas of ripe apple, quince, cream and spice. The texture is luxurious, almost decadent, but the balanced acidity and extract carry it to an alluringly long finish. The domaine owns 0.65 hectares down the slope from Le Rognet et Corton in Ladoix that face due east; the grapes are carefully sorted, pressed as whole clusters, and fermented in cask (one-quarter new). This wine should open nicely in five years and will drink well for a further 20. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) The fine deep colour goes without saying. Immediate raspberry and strawberry fruit thrusts itself to the front. Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. This is going to be a beautiful bottle in due course, with a lovely, fine, summer pudding aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) A deep and vibrant ruby purple. This also has the seductive quality one wants but definitely is more precise, more subtle. There is a special backbone to this wine which makes it complete rather than just superficially attractive. This Charmes-Chambertin has a definite mineral finish. Drink from 2031-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) Fine mid purple. Two barrels, two producers, some Mazoyères mixed in. 100% new wood, grains fins. This also is pretty massive, though that perhaps hides the character of Charmes whereas it supports Clos Vougeot. Still, it is important to defend a little more extraction at a time when too many feet are being taken too far off the pedal. There is a light and unimportant toasty reduction, plus some of the sweet Charmes strawberry fruit, then a crunchy mineral note to the finish. A little bit dissociated at the moment but scored for its definite potential. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

James Suckling (97-98) A sleeping giant! Incredibly complex structure with enormous earthy depth, the sweet fruit really coming through in the spectacular finish. Wild energy! Long term stuff, but the aftertaste is incredible. More Info

Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Corton Grand Cru comes from a parcel within the lieu-dit of Le Charlemagne. It has quite a serious bouquet, tightly wound. This will need time to open but is extremely well-defined with a sense of Pinot classicism. It doesn't sing 'n dance. The palate is well-balanced, the 25% new oak seamlessly integrated, building discretely towards the beautifully poised finish. This Corton might be easily overlooked, but for me, it epitomizes how far this Grand Cru has improved in recent years. Wonderful. More Info

Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a classy bouquet with beautifully defined black cherry and bilberry fruit, an underlying mineralité becoming more evident with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is fresh with finely chiseled tannins and impressive structure, yet finishes harmonious and pure. Bon vin. More Info

Burghound (90-92) A cooler and airier nose somewhat grudgingly displays its array of various dark berries, especially black raspberry, violet and a hint of wet stone character. The fleshy, rich and nicely textured medium weight flavors exhibit even more minerality on the youthfully austere, compact and serious finale. This balanced effort is textbook Es Chezots and should repay 8 to 12 years of keeping. More Info

Vinous (90-92) The 2022 Marsannay Blanc Les Longeroies has a backward, slightly reductive, flinty bouquet, suggesting it will benefit from time in bottle. The well-balanced palate is tensile and edgy with a keen thread of acidity. Bitter lemon and orange rind enliven the finish. Good potential. More Info

Vinous (91-93) The 2022 Marsannay Les Longeroies offers blackberry, wild hedgerow and forest floor scents on the nose, with a faint hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit and fine tannins. There is a little compactness towards the finish at the moment, but it is surfeit with freshness and tension. A hint of white pepper surfaces on the aftertaste. What a lovely Marsannay this will be. More Info

Burghound (88-91) Here the nose displays that peculiar kind of reduction called bourgeon de cassis, or cassis bud, that crowds out more interesting notes. On the palate there is much better freshness and verve to the detailed and stony middleweight flavors that deliver good depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale More Info

A more floral-suffused nose presents a range of aromas that include violet, dark currant and black cherry. The very supple and fleshy middleweight flavors possess a seductive texture while exhibiting enough depth and persistence on the balanced finale to be interesting. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry. Touches of fig and dates tincture the black fruit. Was this picked just a day or two later than optimal? It feels too sweet for my liking and compared to the previous vintage. More Info

Jancis Robinson (18) Mid cherry red. Less open than the Vosne-Romanée just tasted. Peppery and definitely spiced with a touch of oak and stems all tangled up in the aroma. A dark beauty as it opens in the glass. So elegant, embryonic and yet refined already. Fresh, appears subtle, and it is, but it's also powerful and long. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95) The 2022 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with dark plum, raspberry coulis, incense and light sous-bois scents. It takes quite a few swirls of the glass to get the aromas going. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured, assertive opening. The tannins are slightly chalky, lending this Corton-Pougets edginess/nerve. Fine mineralité towards the finish yet tightly wound and almost curmudgeonly in its nascent state, this Grand Cru will demand long-term agin More Info
