Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A little paler in colour, though not racked, with more red fruit, an attractive more savoury note, even fruit spread across the palate, enough acidity to finish with few tannins in sight. Another version was paler at the edges, a richness of fruit at the front of the palate, and a more gravelly texture behind. Crunchy fruit with some grip. This version, aged in amphora, was never sulphured yet vibrant, and will be blended in to the regular version. Scored for the main version. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)There have been biodynamic experiments in Clos St-Landry for 5 years now. Does that add to the precision immediately apparent on the nose? Mid lemon colour. This is very stylish on the palate with excellent length and clean acidity, light mirabelle notes but otherwise more in pure white fruit. A little cream to finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)More crimson than purple, with notably more presence than the other Beaunes. A range of fruits finishing with some black cherry after the dark red berries, a heightened intensity of fruit, with an excellent balance between tannin and acidity, and notable length. Not racked but has retained purity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A dark purple colour. Quite a ripe fruit which could use the cleaning up of a racking, at which time it will have the sulphur adjusted. Dark ripe cherries on the nose. A wealth of fruit at the front end, some tannins but not astringent behind, a dark strawberry fruit to finish. This has the makings of a very good wine once it has finished its elevage and been cleaned up for bottling. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Mid to deep crimson. Cooked strawberries on the nose. Not really cooked, crushed and peppery really. 50% whole bunches can be seen as well as the limestone aspect of the top of the hill. Almost floral, aiming at a more elegant style rather than a massive one, given the situation. But a very long finish. I was also shown an amphora version of the Corton which had a mid-crimson colour, with a dark raspberry and crushed strawberry nose. Like the Clos de la Mousse, the amphora version comes across as a bit gravelly, the tannins a little more pronounced. Scored for the main version. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Decanter (96)This delicious white Corton has an almost Montrachet-like richness and depth of flavour, with its aromas of ripe apple, quince, cream and spice. The texture is luxurious, almost decadent, but the balanced acidity and extract carry it to an alluringly long finish. The domaine owns 0.65 hectares down the slope from Le Rognet et Corton in Ladoix that face due east; the grapes are carefully sorted, pressed as whole clusters, and fermented in cask (one-quarter new). This wine should open nicely in five years and will drink well for a further 20. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)An even fuller yellow and an even more luxuriant nose, as Clos des Mouches cannot help. I still haven’t understood just why this vineyard should make such opulent, creamily textured wines. The oak is for me just a little bit too present but it should sort itself out after a light bentonite fining and filtering. Good acidity. Plenty of wine to work with here! Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A fine bright purple. Concentrated raspberry with a bit of strawberry. There is a more graceful rounded character to the fruit here, a certain succulence into which the oak blends very well. This has a fine sense of harmony and will make an agreeable bottle in the not too distant future. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Not in bottle. Medium to bright purple. 50% whole bunch makes a more classic pinot fruit on the nose. Opens out very nicely, slightly more acidity than tannin to make the structure. No great density but pleasingly perfumed with raspberry and rose petals. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)(5 Star Wine) First we tasted the component parts. (1) Young vines from 1980s. A deep concentrated purple. Lesser foliage in the hot dry summer has concentrated the colour and other aspects, giving a dark style of fruit as well, with a nutty finish, but good acidity. (2) A blend, mainly from plot #3 and a bit of #1. Mid purple in colour, less demonstrative on the nose. A much suppler style of fruit, less forceful acidity, fine length, more typical Epenots here. (3) Old vines, 90+ years old: A deep glowing purple. A little more intensity, a gorgeous quality of deep red fruit, just a touch tougher in its tannins, plus the acidity. (4) Press wine: dark purple, powerful rather than fine on the nose, more volatile, but could be useful in the blend. Sweet thick dark red to black fruit. Chunky stuff. And now the blend: A deep purple colour with only a very slightly lighter rim. The bouquet suggests poise as the fruit has melded together harmoniously. On the palate this is, as almost always, a much more complete wine than the individual parts. The wine seems to push down deeper while retaining all the class of the very best components. We are approaching the cusp of red and black fruit, the acidity is perfectly harnessed and the tannins are fine grained. Potentially a very fine Clos des Epeneaux. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)Mature vines in the lower central part of Grèves, with all bunches destemmed, two weeks cuvaison, 35% new wood, still in barrel, bottling expected in March. Crimson red, a rather sombre nose, lacks life. The oak is currently much too powerful and slightly dries the wine. Dark red fruit some spice, and a touch of liquorice, but with a slightly bitter finish. In a difficult place at the moment. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Corton Grand Cru comes from a parcel within the lieu-dit of Le Charlemagne. It has quite a serious bouquet, tightly wound. This will need time to open but is extremely well-defined with a sense of Pinot classicism. It doesn't sing 'n dance. The palate is well-balanced, the 25% new oak seamlessly integrated, building discretely towards the beautifully poised finish. This Corton might be easily overlooked, but for me, it epitomizes how far this Grand Cru has improved in recent years. Wonderful. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Mid cherry red. Less open than the Vosne-Romanée just tasted. Peppery and definitely spiced with a touch of oak and stems all tangled up in the aroma. A dark beauty as it opens in the glass. So elegant, embryonic and yet refined already. Fresh, appears subtle, and it is, but it's also powerful and long. |

Jancis Robinson (17.5)Mid cherry red. Seductive, sweet-floral, perfumed. Open and expressive. Then deeper and more savoury on the palate. Super-fine tannins with lots of layers so that overall they are slightly chewy. Multilayerd, deeply fruited and very long. A harmonious beauty. |

Wine Advocate (93-94)The 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is excellent, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries mingled with exotic spices, orange zest and petals. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, its textural attack segues into an unctuous core of fruit, concluding with a long, expansive finish. |

Wine Advocate (92-94)The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches (Domaine) is shaping up beautifully, revealing aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, licorice and spices deftly framed by toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and powdery tannins, the Drouhin's own fully 14 hectares of this prime premier cru, which is divided equally between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. |
