Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets 1er Cru has a very endearing bouquet, the best of Jadot's Chassagne cuvées, yellow plum and custard cremes, orange pith and a touch of blackcurrant leaf. The palate is certainly the most elegant and refined, crisp and detailed, with a harmonious, peachy finish dragging you back for another sip. Excellent. More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru is showing a little more oak than other cuvées, though it marries well with the fruit, touches of menthol percolating through with time, quite lively and precocious. The palate is well-balanced and quite intense on the entry, with orange rind and subtle peachy notes. It builds nicely in the glass and fans out with a sense of brio on the finish. This will be difficult to resist when young. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) (5 Star Wine) The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) From the two remaining plots of Perrières after one has been repositioned (see under Puligny Chalumeaux). Attractive fresh fruit on the nose and then the weight of the appellation comes up. Some ripe apples, but then a broader basket of slightly more exotic fruit, that has not been allowed to ripen too far. A fine balanced whole with the power to develop. Drink from 2032-2040. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Mid lemon yellow. A mix of engaging ripe fruit and some reduction. Complex, but also tightly wound, a tannic structure behind. It isn’t singing at this stage of its life, but I don’t doubt the qualities, so this should reach the upper end of the range. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) Another beautiful bouquet after an elegant colour. This keeps building, and seems to have rediscovered the magic of Combettes which I thought was lost in the hottest years. There is a fulsome weight of white fruit, while retaining energy. Vinous (93) Wipe your tears because this is the last vintage of Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru for now; the vines were pulled up after the harvest as production had tumbled to untenable levels, plus there was unacceptable soil erosion. The well-defined bouquet is intense with yellow plum, Mirabelle, crushed stone and wilted white flowers. The palate is very well-balanced with superb tension, focused and energetic with a saline finish. Bowing out in style. More Info

Vinous (92) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has wonderful delineation and poise on the nose, real frisson, with yellow fruit, egg whites and wild peach. Love it! The palate is very well-balanced with a touch of reduction, elegant in style, perhaps needing more depth and grip on the finish. But this is very suave and nuanced. More Info

Vinous (92) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a terroir-driven, minerally bouquet with crushed stone filtering through the orchard fruit and subtle hazelnut and litchi scents developing in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, perhaps just a little conservative/timid at the moment, precise yet bashful. Hints of rose water and peach skin towards the finish. One of the prettiest cuvées from Fontaine-Gagnard this year. More Info

Vinous (93-95) The 2022 Meursault Clos Richemont 1er Cru is a dense, opulent white built on texture more than anything else. It is one of the most overt wines in the Boillot range. Orange jam, spice, vanillin, lemon confit and baked apple tart infuse the 2022 with tons of textural intensity. This is such a distinctive wine. More Info

Vinous (94-96) The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru is a complex, dynamic wine. I especially admire its focus. Pear, slate, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper all hover across the palate in a Meursault that marries fruit richness with layers of depth and explosive energy. In other words, classic Genevrières. The 2022 is quite reticent today, but I take that as a positive sign for the future. What a gorgeous wine this is. More Info

Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is bright, tense and nicely focused. Lemon peel, mint, crushed rocks and white pepper lend notable energy to this wonderfully vibrant, sculpted Puligny. All the elements are so well balanced. Saline notes emerge in the glass, supporting the beautifully persistent finish nicely. This is so attractive. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) 5 Star Wine. Mid yellow, with a biscuity touch. Seems unsubtle until you get to the palate which is super powerful but also with subtlety. This Monopole vineyard comprises four distinct terroirs though they are always assembled. An electric backbone stops the power overturning the balance. Yellow fruit, and then an extraordinary, indeed grand cru, weight. Incisive white fruit finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. More Info

Little white fruits and flowers, perfectly nuanced, very slightly richer at the back and extraordinarily long on the palate. Perfect fruit acid matching all the way through. Drink from 2030-2038. Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91) The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a more airy and floral bouquet than the Embazées, leaning slightly towards Puligny in style. The palate doesn't quite match the promise set by the nose – it is quite weighty and concentrated with an overtly spicy finish. I was expecting more precision here, and I might prefer the previous vintage. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95) A blend of Abbaye de Morgeot and Francemont. Medium deep yellow. The nose is a little biscuity and a little backward. Then there is surprising weight, largely yellow plum fruit, very good fruit/acid integration, and fair length. This wine does indeed show the power of the Morgeot terroir. Drink from 2030-2038. The talent of Perrières is to have this enormous weight of fruit while delivering also a crystalline minerality. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) (5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. More Info
