Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)More crimson than purple, with notably more presence than the other Beaunes. A range of fruits finishing with some black cherry after the dark red berries, a heightened intensity of fruit, with an excellent balance between tannin and acidity, and notable length. Not racked but has retained purity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Fresh and even slightly peppery at the finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93)In bottle since end October. Mostly from Les Porlottes, which is higher and cooler and the last to be picked, plus also the small holdings of 1ers crus Baudes and Fuées. A glowing purple with quite a dark centre. Fully ripe but not unduly heady dark raspberry fruit, with a fine concentration of fruit. Dark notes include bilberries but also an excellent mineral freshness. Fine length, a very fine example. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: November 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)The 2022 Musigny Grand Cru contains 50% whole bunches and was raised entirely in new oak. It comprises four 150-liter barrels. Maybe that smaller size means greater wood impact on the nose: at the moment, it just occludes the fruit profile, the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannins, dark berry fruit, black pepper, dark chocolate, mint, and a touch of cloves. The finish has fine weight and depth, although it will require a decade to soak up the new wood. It's a fine Musigny, but you'll need to taste this after time in bottle to gauge the quality. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Purple in the centre with a lighter rim. The nose speaks a little of its oak and a lot of its fruit, a riper style of red berries, yet with good acidity behind, indeed quite fresh at the finish after a slight heaviness up front. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)A glowing crimson purple. A certain nobility to the nose. A brilliant combination of hedonism and precision, the expressive dense floral notes, waves of perfectly ripe red fruit, and that’s just the bouquet. Suave, sweetly fruited, nuanced, yet never losing site of the grace and the depth. Caresses all parts. Seamless finish with perfect acid and tannin balance. Drink from 2034-2045+. Tasted: November 2023. |

Discover an extraordinary expression of Burgundian terroir with the Nicolas Faure Nuits-Saint-Georges Herbues 2022. An exciting young talent, Nicolas Faure crafts this phenomenal red from a small patch of vines in the Nuits-Saint-Georges region of eastern France. Influenced by biodynamic practices, Faure works with old vines, ploughs with horses and eschews commercial yeasts, endeavouring to express the unique character of each vintage. The 2022 Herbues offers a complexity beyond its years, revealing layers of ripe dark fruit, damp earth, and aromatic spices. Hand-harvested, fermenting naturally with stems, then matured in oak for 18 months, it is a wine of richness and depth, seamlessly fused with vibrant acidity and supple tannins. The Nicolas Faure Nuits-Saint-Georges Herbues 2022 is a pure, captivating, and ethereal wine that memorably articulates its birthplace's distinctive geography and climate. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)30% decorticated, all new wood. A glowing imperial purple. What a wealth of fruit is here, how noble in reason. In another league from the other grands crus chez Thibault. I think the finest Richebourg I have seen from him. There is a coconut effect from the wood. The mid palate is particularly intense. An intense red fruit note, then dark raspberry, and the finish is completely swamped by the fruit. Drink from 2035-2045. Tasted: November 2023. |
