Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) Mid purple, with a reductive nose, having not yet been racked. It resides in a single new 456 litre barrel whence a slight bacon fat reduction. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97) From the upper part of Les Treux. Glowing purple. The nose is discreet. The palate does the Echezeaux latticework thing with lots of detail, and exceptional length. Goes on dancing, tiptoeing, across the palate for a long time. Just one barrel. The fruit stays with me. Vinous (92-94) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has a taut, focused bouquet of black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with a slight flintiness in the background. Very fine delineation here. The medium-bodied palate has a concentrated opening, fleshy and vibrant with blood orange-infused blueberry and raspberry fruit, then quite strict and peppery towards the finish. This represents a sterling follow-up to the impressive 2021 last year. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96) A rich intense purple. The bouquet has the enhanced heady qualities I associate with Malconsorts. Some peonies perhaps, then a lush but stable fruit across the palate, with a wealth behind, which does indeed cover the tannins. Persistent. This Malconsorts is a firmly constructed wine with stable tannins, also the flesh to cover them. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98) 100% mixed forests, to bottle in April. Fine mid purple. The nose is not so drop dead stunning as the Clos Vougeot but it is still impressive, and then the palate delivers yet more. Some rose petals, some vibrant deep red fruit, chiselled and intense at the same time, nuanced without latticework. Then a firm structure. Looks like becoming a great wine but under the cosh from the Clos Vougeot this year. But there is a breadth of fruit here nonetheless. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96) 100% new wood, to bottle in April. The wood comes from mixed forests, as Jean-Pierre thinks Tronçais doesn’t work here. A bright fresh crimson ruby. More floral more sensual, the early morning rose says Jean-Pierre. This is more quintessentially Vosne than the Brûlées, with a lifted and balanced flair, a mix of darked red fruits, avoiding the blacker side. White pepper spice becomes more apparent at the end. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97) (5 Star Wine) Deep ruby crimson colour. At this end of the scale the power of the fruit and the vineyard character completely outweigh the vinification. 100% new wood (Tronçais) is invisible. Instead, we find the slaty and singed character of the vineyard, plus an astonishing wealth of fruit. A thickness of texture which is extraordinary. Quite stunning this year with the blood red depth of fruit. Enough acidity behind and exceptional pure as well as concentrated. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94) Purple in the centre with a lighter rim. The nose speaks a little of its oak and a lot of its fruit, a riper style of red berries, yet with good acidity behind, indeed quite fresh at the finish after a slight heaviness up front. Wine Advocate (93-95) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is one of the highlights of the range this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and exotic spices and framed by a deft application of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with terrific depth, velvety tannins and a long, broad finish. Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a vivid, bright bouquet with perfumed, very floral red berry fruit and touches of white flowers filtering through with time in the glass. Quite classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, slightly tarry black and red fruit, hints of black pepper and graphite towards a complex, engaging finish. Super More Info

Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97) The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb. More Info

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95) 100% new wood. Dense dark purple, the nose currently dominated by the oak, but it will integrate well without any sign of drying the ample fruit. Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96) The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a perfumed, very floral bouquet with wilted rose petals and touches of lavender, complementing the vivacious red fruit. It is an archetypal Echézeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It’s quite peppery towards the finish, so you might misconstrue it as containing some whole bunches. Very satisfying complexity on the finish; this is an excellent Eche. More Info
