Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is very ripe and almost ostentatious on the nose with its plush red plum and fresh figgy scents. Maybe just a little over-ripe? The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, saturated tannins. This is a "big" Volnay, with plenty of "rondeur" with a welcome pinch of cracked black pepper enlivening the finish. If you're not bothered about elegance, this may suit you, though I might err toward the excellent 2021. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Two thirds whole bunch and just 12.5% here. A lovely vibrant purple, full of energy. There is a sublime elegance to this on the nose, then a rather earthier dark fruit and a few tannins behind. One can see the suggestion of grand cru in the terroir of Caillerets compared to most other Volnay 1ers Crus. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Fresh mid purple. This also has a fresher quality to the fruit, lively strawberry, I thought of some whole bunches but they were not used. Perhaps not quite the length here of the best in the stable. A little austerity at the back within the context of this vintage. 13.2% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)A small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Not in bottle. Medium to bright purple. 50% whole bunch makes a more classic pinot fruit on the nose. Opens out very nicely, slightly more acidity than tannin to make the structure. No great density but pleasingly perfumed with raspberry and rose petals. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Just two ouvrées of 15 year old vines. Not in bottle. Mid crimson, attractively perfumed, just a bit sweaty, concentrated raspberry with some strawberry, good acidity. 100% whole bunch gives the style. A long and lifted finish with purity, suggests that this will come together very nicely. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)(5 Star Wine) First we tasted the component parts. (1) Young vines from 1980s. A deep concentrated purple. Lesser foliage in the hot dry summer has concentrated the colour and other aspects, giving a dark style of fruit as well, with a nutty finish, but good acidity. (2) A blend, mainly from plot #3 and a bit of #1. Mid purple in colour, less demonstrative on the nose. A much suppler style of fruit, less forceful acidity, fine length, more typical Epenots here. (3) Old vines, 90+ years old: A deep glowing purple. A little more intensity, a gorgeous quality of deep red fruit, just a touch tougher in its tannins, plus the acidity. (4) Press wine: dark purple, powerful rather than fine on the nose, more volatile, but could be useful in the blend. Sweet thick dark red to black fruit. Chunky stuff. And now the blend: A deep purple colour with only a very slightly lighter rim. The bouquet suggests poise as the fruit has melded together harmoniously. On the palate this is, as almost always, a much more complete wine than the individual parts. The wine seems to push down deeper while retaining all the class of the very best components. We are approaching the cusp of red and black fruit, the acidity is perfectly harnessed and the tannins are fine grained. Potentially a very fine Clos des Epeneaux. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)Six barrels, two of them new. A medium to bright purple. The nose is invigorating with as little as 10% whole bunches, enough to add a floral note. This is lively on the palate, a Fremiets which has remembered it is in Volnay, not Pommard, delightfully stylish at the finish. Drink from 2032-2037. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Mid crimson to purple, with some reduction on the nose. A concentrated dark raspberry fruit, still with this reductive element. If and when that clears there is a fine long finish to look forward to instead. Impressive fruit in the end, so scored on the asu, mption that the reduction will clear. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)80 year old vines in clay soil, a vineyard run by the Delaunay team. Destemmed 36% new wood, all destemmed. Dark crimson purple. The Chaponnières has a lovely bouquet of dense ripe cherries and a good fruit acid balance, I find this wine altogether livelier and more interesting than the Beaune Grèves. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burghound (94-97)(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. This is also terrific |
