Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)Mid purple, with a reductive nose, having not yet been racked. It resides in a single new 456 litre barrel whence a slight bacon fat reduction. The intensity of fruit explodes on the palate behind the wood, this will come round with longer elevage. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-91)From Les Tuyaux, Herbues, Fleurières, all destemmed. Pretty mid purple. This is more in red fruit than black, with good body and excellent length. A very nice example reflecting its mostly northern Nuits provenance. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)Purple colour. A very heady nose, luxurious, nothing cooked. A consistent, coherent richness throughout, with a raft of tannins to finish, but they do not dry out the wine at all. A final ball of dark cherry fruit at the very end. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Rich dark purple, not racked, so the nose is a bit edgy at the moment. There is impressive density here, plus some raw tannins, giving a drier finish. No doubting the concentration though. This may just be in a very backward stage. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a focused and intense nose: blackberry and raspberry fruit, melted tar, and discrete touches of dried white flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fresh acidity. It’s quite ripe towards the finish, leaning a little too far towards the blacker side of the fruit spectrum at the expense of Pinoté. |

With an exciting expression of the finest Burgundy terroir, the Chantal Lescure Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vallerots 2022 is a magnificent offering from a highly esteemed domaine. Expertly crafted in the prestigious stone cellars of Château de Premeaux, this enticingly robust Pinot Noir reflects the producer's commitment to organic viticulture and attention to detail. This intricate process utilises the legacy of ageing in French oak barrels, imparting the wine with remarkable character. Highly regarded for their discerning winemaking artistry, Chantal Lescure's vines stretch across the hallowed soils of Côte-d'Or, permeating their wines with an unmistakable essence of place. The 2022 Les Vallerots 1er Cru offers a vivid palette of exquisite red fruit aromas, gracefully underscored by a flinty mineral sharpness and convincingly silky tannins. A sublime testament to Chantal Lescure's ethos of unerring quality, the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vallerots 2022 is truly a wine to be treasured. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)One of the slightly darker purple colours, with a ripe and dark edged fruit. I sense the whole bunches more here than in the Clos Vougeot. Becomes more nuanced further back on the palate, with greater energy to the fruit. I was not sure from the nose but the palate works with a good balance between the slightly riper fruit profile and the acidity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)Just as deep a purple colour but more elegance on the nose, less obviously and immediately sumptuous. Wavelets of alpine strawberry and its raspberry equivalent dance across the palate, super fine, with startling elegance. Another 2022 beauty from Thomas. Drink from 2030-2038. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)From the upper part of Les Treux. Glowing purple. The nose is discreet. The palate does the Echezeaux latticework thing with lots of detail, and exceptional length. Goes on dancing, tiptoeing, across the palate for a long time. Just one barrel. The fruit stays with me. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Laurent characterises Argillats as a hot and cold terroir. 15% whole bunch vinification, 3 barrels of which two new. Not quite so deep in colour and a little lighter in fruit, though the oak marks the nose, and the palate. Nonetheless, I think the fruit will fight through, and it has an appealing fresh red fruit quality. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: November 2023. |

Burghound (94-97)(from a 1.29 ha parcel). A classic Bèze nose of spice, earth and plenty of floral influence leads to succulent and round yet decidedly intense, muscular and powerful flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while delivering huge length on the seamlessly balanced if moderately austere finish. This is also terrific |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru is aged in 50% new oak and completely de-stemmed. This is pleasingly floral on the nose, with wilted roses filtering through the raspberry and redcurrant fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a keen line of acidity. This is very elegant in style, with a composed and transparent finish. What a lovely Les Damodes from Faiveley. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)The Les St Georges comes under the negociant label, Joseph Faiveley, as the produce of their own vines is mixed with two other sources, one of which is the Hospices de Nuits. A deep crimson colour. The bouquet is relatively luxurious, a super succulent ripe raspberry, with very good tension behind. This seems very young, but the abundant fruit and the structure are promising. The fruit on the palate is fresher than for the village Nuits. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |
