Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (96-98)The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has darker fruit on the nose than the Clos de la Roche: blackberry and bilberry, crushed violet, and plenty of forest floor commingling with light granitic scents. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, very harmonious with a cashmere texture. There’s impressive weight on the finish with outstanding tension. I thought the 2021 was a knockout last year… This is, too. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)Just taken from the plot up at the top as the lower plot has very young vines. Dark crimson to magenta colour. The nose is powerful, coming across as four-square after the ethereal Cazetiers. Impeccable density and as usual less immediate detail in the fruit, which is ripe and red rather than black. 60% whole bunch which livens it up but is less easily visible. Just the right tannins, fine length. Very good promise. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

From the revered vineyards of Burgundy, the C. Thiriet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Initiale 2022 is a symbol of the mastery of French winemaking. This particular vintage pays homage to the revered terroir in the northern slopes of Clos de Vougeot, where the grapes are carefully nurtured to transmit that magical palate charm. Awards and high ratings bedeck the legacy of producer C. Thiriet, a testament to their meticulous approach to quality and attention to subtleties of the vinification process. This fine wine is created with 100% Pinot Noir grapes, exuding an intoxicating bouquet with layered notes of redcurrant, cherry, and raw cacao. In the mouth, the C. Thiriet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Initiale 2022 unfolds to reveal a bold yet refined structure, balanced with the right acidity and tannin edginess, leading to a complex finish. An exceptional exemplar of Grand Cru, this wine is both a testament to its esteemed origin and a pleasure to the senses. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)A rich deep purple, super saturated, with a bouquet to match. A full and firm structure with Thomas Collardot’s abundant fruit flowing over the top. A darker fruit with a blackberry note, but not the mulberry which would imply over-ripeness. The 20% whole bunch vinification adds an additional freshness, a slight salinity which works very well. Drink from 2032-2040. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)A bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)5 barrels, two from Petit Maupertuis destemmed, three others which are in new barrels and with 100% whole bunch vinification. The Clos Vougeot is very reductive at first, though this starts to blow off. There is a huge volume of fruit though and the two halves seem to marry up. Actually, rather an astonishing weight of fruit at the back of the palate. Definitely a Vin de Garde. This still needs more elevage but is very promising. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |

Embodying the heights of French viticulture, the Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 is a true gem of superior wine. Clustered in the acclaimed region of Burgundy, this wine captures the characteristic subtlety and depth of Pinot Noir. Taking advantage of the remarkable terroir at Clos Vougeot, its development is carefully overseen by the eponymous Gros siblings, whose family legacy in winemaking has extended over a glorious century. Firmly rooted on slopes blanketed with limestone clay, their vague pronunciation is an ode to meticulous cultivation, traditional vinification methods, and an enduring respect for nature. Aged in French oak, it offers an ethereal bouquet of cherry and plum interspersed with earthy undertones. On the palate, this wine displays immense structure and complexity, met with a soft elegance and a lasting finish that illustrates the emblem of the 'Gros Frere et Soeur Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2022'. A symphony in a bottle, it unquestionably validates the prestige of Burgundy wines. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)(5 Star Wine) 100% new Tronçais wood, for April bottling. A deep central core of purple. Very intense indeed without being clumsy. There is a massive structure here to build on, but it is all about the intensity of the fruit. Deep red not black, almost as thrilling as the 2020 Echezeaux. Waves more fruit come flooding back across the palate, with everything in perfect proportion. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a refined and harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, wild hedgerow and light oyster shell notes, ameliorating all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle and black pepper. It's quite complex and very long on the finish. Superb. |

Jancis Robinson (18)Light to mid crimson. Intoxicating, floral-layered red fruit with a touch of pepper. On the palate, entirely seductive with intense and pure dark-red fruits. Excellent combination of concentration, freshness and length. Then a savoury aftertaste all tangled up in the tannic elegance. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 30% stems this year, which is translated onto the nose distinct from Jadot's other reds: cracked black pepper and damp earth infuse the red fruit and lend the complexity underlying their inclusion. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and much more depth than the previous vintage, with a slightly powdery/chalky finish. There’s plenty of energy and tension from start to finish; this should age in consummate style. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)Glowing fresh crimson colour. The nose shows fresh fruit without detail as yet. I am impressed by the weight and energy of this very promising Clos Vougeot There is plenty up front, muscular, but enough behind too. A beautiful finish as pure class peeps throughout. Very happy with this! Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Very reductive, partly from the barrel. However, the wine shows through on the palate with just a slightly dry finish. This rougher edge is the reduction speaking. While there is a fair weight of fruit here, the reduction is winning for now, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023. |

Burghound (91-94)(from a huge 3 ha parcel superbly placed high on the slope, across from the Château that is mostly in the lieu-dit of Chioures with a small parcel in Grand Maupertui). An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated style |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)50% whole bunch vinification, for the southern side planted in 1944, while the 1992 planting is destemmed. Thibault pushes the extraction a little more here. A dense dark concentrated purple. This policy fills out the middle palate more with a dark black fruit but leaves the finish on the dry side with a little torrefaction. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023. |
