Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous (96-98)

The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has darker fruit on the nose than the Clos de la Roche: blackberry and bilberry, crushed violet, and plenty of forest floor commingling with light granitic scents. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, very harmonious with a cashmere texture. There’s impressive weight on the finish with outstanding tension. I thought the 2021 was a knockout last year… This is, too.

Experience an exquisite glass of the 'Borgeot Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres Blanc 2022,' a perfect example of the renowned Borgeot brothers' craftsmanship. Produced in the heart of Burgundy, France, this fine wine reflects the nuances of the local terroir. The Borgeot brothers have, for generations, faithfully employed age-old techniques; organic farming and handpicking the white Chardonnay grapes used. This meticulous process gives way to sensational varietal expression and structure. The result—the Borgeot Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres Blanc 2022, is a sumptuous wine, drenched in poetic aromas of ripe lemon, toasted almond, and robust minerality. Upon sipping, one experiences a vibrant mouthfeel, stacked with a firm acidity and long, elegant finish. This wine personifies the winemakers dedication to tradition, authenticity, and quality. The Borgeot Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres Blanc 2022 certainly stands as a testament to the Borgeot's mastery in winemaking. A bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2022 Santenay Les Pierres Sèches comprises five barrels this year (one new). Orchard fruit mixed with light honeyed scents on the nose, perhaps requiring just a little more delineation. The palate is well-balanced with commendable purity, slightly waxy in texture, with a dab of stem ginger enlivening the finish. Fine weight and persistence, I prefer this to the previous vintage.

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)

The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru contains 30% stems this year, which is translated onto the nose distinct from Jadot's other reds: cracked black pepper and damp earth infuse the red fruit and lend the complexity underlying their inclusion. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and much more depth than the previous vintage, with a slightly powdery/chalky finish. There’s plenty of energy and tension from start to finish; this should age in consummate style.

The Clos de Malte has a lively ruby colour. The nose is an immediate delight of fresh red fruit, a bit of cherry. Firm structure, acidity, tannins and a little nuttiness, all of which will resolve reasonably quickly in bottle, leaving this entirely delicious fruit to enjoy. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)

A pretty mid purple, soft and elegant on the nose. Fills the mouth very well, with a good point of acidity, while staying true to its name of Charmes. Good length here. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)

Fresh purple colour. 17 barrels worth in all. A middle weight purple, pure clean and lively raspberry fruit, good acidity behind. This is a more accessible style of wine, still with good length, but a little less structure. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)

Made in a mix of 350 and new 600 litre barrels. Mid lemon yellow. A little toast on the nose, this is stricter than Champ Claude, just a little bit of reduction, good length again. Develops a more concentrated apple note further back on the palate. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023.

From Les Hates and Prarons. Mid purple, A greener aspect to the nose, but an extra degree of classy red fruit on the palate, and a better texture at the finish. Good judgement with the degree of whole bunches, I think. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Very reductive, partly from the barrel. However, the wine shows through on the palate with just a slightly dry finish. This rougher edge is the reduction speaking. While there is a fair weight of fruit here, the reduction is winning for now, but note that this wine has not yet been racked. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.
