2021 |
(Maison) Louis Jadot Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru offers a touch more complexity and nuance than the Clos-de-Bèze with red berry fruit, orange rind, crushed stone and wilted rose petals. It's a little more delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, again, quite creamy in texture with a bit of new oak on the finish (though there is a prudent use of new wood - one new barrel out of three). Quite seductive, this should age well in bottle, though afford it four to five years at least.

2021 |
(Maison) Louis Jadot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17.5++)Cask sample. There is real weight and class here. Good freshness but depth and weight too. Long and dense. With more exciting nerve than in many other vintages. Correct interpretation of a rich grand cru with a fresh vintage. Persistent. Should age well.

(Maison) Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (94-96)There is just one barrel of the 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru this year. This oak comes through quite strongly at the moment, especially compared to the Chevalier alongside, though there is obviously real power and intensity here. The palate is very well-balanced and multi-layered with gorgeous yellow fruit, crushed stone and hints of lemongrass toward the finish. This seems to really fill the mouth with flavour, though it deserves four to five years in bottle. Maybe I just prefer the more nuanced Chevalier.

|
2021 |
Albert Bichot Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis Grand Cru Moutonne 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (91)The 2021 Chablis La Moutonne Grand Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, although there seems to be some decent fruit behind it. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, lemon zest and a touch of tangerine, lightly spiced towards the finish that fans out nicely. This is a decent effort in a difficult growing season. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis.

2021 |
Arlaud Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (96-98)The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is the last poured by Cyprien Arlaud, though curiously, atypically for this cuvée, aromatically, it is a bit obdurate at first on the nose, eventually revealing mineral-laden red berry fruit reminiscent of Roumier (Christophe). The palate is very well balanced, not powerful but surfeit with finesse and adorned with symmetry and poise. Seamlessly integrated oak with a long finish conveying the terroir to the max. Awesome. Three (and a quarter) barrels.

2021 |
Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (94-96)The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. This is a lovely Charmes-Chambertin that should evolve wonderfully in bottle.

2021 |
Arlaud Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (94-96)The 2021 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru has a slightly reticent nose at first, unfurling with white-tipped strawberry, cranberry jus and crushed stone aromas that become more vocal with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, fine acidity, fresh but unapologetically strict on the finish. This will need several years in bottle, but is very promising.

Arlot Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2021 (1x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, takes time to unfurl on the nose: brambly red fruit, undergrowth, just a touch of liquorice and sea spray. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity, more open than previous vintages, supple and very pure on the finish. Wonderful. Four barrels produced - the maximum produced from their holding.

|
2021 |
Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl) Burghound (92-95)Here the more reticent nose isn’t as elegant though it is more complex with its layered blend of red and dark pinot fruit, anise and discreet earth and floral wisps. The supple and highly seductive medium weight flavors possess excellent depth and persistence on the mildly austere finale. This is already appealing and several years of cellaring should only enhance its attractiveness.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (1x150cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)954 barrels only from Bouchard’s 2+ hectares, including the La Cabotte section which could not be made separately this year. A touch of coconut and light vanilla sitting on top of the concentrated, mostly white, fruit. A touch of verbena, ripe citrus, even a hint of liquorice. The fruit weight builds at the back. A softer finish than some producers this year. Kicks on a bit more right at the back. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: November 2022

Bouchard Pere & Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (92-94)There is just one new 400-liter barrel of the 2021 Echézeaux Grand Cru and is 100% whole bunch. It has a nicely detailed bouquet, though I feel there is maybe a little too much stemminess at the moment, not that Frédéric Weber had ample choice given the depleted volume. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, very harmonious and pure. The stems are more enmeshed towards the lightly spiced finish. Lovely. But it will need time.

Bouchard Pere & Fils Le Corton Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-94)More crimson than purple, with a lifted nose with strawberry smoky notes from 50% whole bunch. Very pretty indeed. Let’s see if there is enough depth on the palate for grand cru. Yes, there is a delicious weight of cherry and strawberry fruit in the middle with an infusion of white pepper, but nothing dry on the finish. 4 stars if you like whole clusters, three if not. 2021 |
Bouchard Pere & Fils Montrachet Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-98)A bit better in yield as everybody protected their vines in Le Montrachet, with the 2016 disaster in mind. A fine mid lemon yellow, this begins discreetly but there is a wonderful concentrated intensity through the middle, a racy quality perhaps not quite there in the Chevalier. This time there is clearly a beginning, a middle and an end. Really enormously persistent and leaving a special taste in the mouth. I might just sip it to keep me company en route to my next tasting in Gevrey-Chambertin! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2022

2021 |
Chateau de la Tour Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Cuvée Classique has a bright and quite lively bouquet, red and black fruit, juniper and hawthorn. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, taut and fresh, brown spices infusing the peppery, tobacco-tinged finish. It needs to cohere a little before bottling, though the racking will assist that.

Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, their only vineyard on the north side of Chambolle, includes around 50% whole bunches this year. The stems are discretely enmeshed, present, but allow the fruit and terroir to speak. I admire the freshness and joie-de-vivre here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, vivid black cherry fruit laced with orange zest/blood orange towards its energetic finish. Bon vin.
