Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)(5 Star Wine) The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)Lemon and lime in colour. The most reserved nose of these three (Bouchères, Porusots, Gouttes d’Or), with a well-rounded fruit on the palate, then ripe apple with a touch of plum on the palate. Greater depth of fruit on the palate, something of a dried fruit character according to Frédéric Weber. The aforementioned trio differ in style but are very hard to separate in quality. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)From the two remaining plots of Perrières after one has been repositioned (see under Puligny Chalumeaux). Attractive fresh fruit on the nose and then the weight of the appellation comes up. Some ripe apples, but then a broader basket of slightly more exotic fruit, that has not been allowed to ripen too far. A fine balanced whole with the power to develop. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)(5 Star Wine) Fine pure lemon yellow. The bouquet starts off rather reserved. A suggestion of immense weight, certainly some new oak, but waiting for the fruit and the personality of the wine to emerge. Now some coconut and the feeling that the wine is about to release its magic. Superbly suave on the palate, more lifted than I expected and still the main core of the wine does not want to be touched. A fine mineral acidity at the finish but still wait and see. Only right at the end does it all start to kick in. A wine of immense density for the very long-term future. Retasting the glorious Cabotte reinforces the majesty of this Montrachet. Drink from 2034-2045+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Rich dark purple, not racked, so the nose is a bit edgy at the moment. There is impressive density here, plus some raw tannins, giving a drier finish. No doubting the concentration though. This may just be in a very backward stage. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)A small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a focused and intense nose: blackberry and raspberry fruit, melted tar, and discrete touches of dried white flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fresh acidity. It’s quite ripe towards the finish, leaning a little too far towards the blacker side of the fruit spectrum at the expense of Pinoté. |

Discover the captivating intensity of Camille & Guillaume Boillot Meursault Les Clous 2022. This sublime expression of Burgundy's terroir hails from Meursault's respected appellation, nestled in the heart of France's celebrated wine region. An esteemed creation of Camille & Guillaume Boillot, the wine brilliantly showcases the duo's adept viticulture and winemaking practices. The grapes, meticulously selected, are nurtured in the unique chalky-clay soils of Les Clous vineyard, with the wine matured in small oak barrels. This traditional practice allows Les Clous to develop its signature depth of flavour. The 2022 vintage is exquisitely nuanced, with vibrant white fruit aromas, nuanced by subtle mineral undertones. On the palate, it's impressively complex, boasting luscious apple and pear notes, delicately accented by hints of walnut and lightly toasted brioche. Camille & Guillaume Boillot Meursault Les Clous 2022 is an enchanting testament to Burgundy's renowned winemaking heritage. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)An even fuller yellow and an even more luxuriant nose, as Clos des Mouches cannot help. I still haven’t understood just why this vineyard should make such opulent, creamily textured wines. The oak is for me just a little bit too present but it should sort itself out after a light bentonite fining and filtering. Good acidity. Plenty of wine to work with here! Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A fine bright purple. Concentrated raspberry with a bit of strawberry. There is a more graceful rounded character to the fruit here, a certain succulence into which the oak blends very well. This has a fine sense of harmony and will make an agreeable bottle in the not too distant future. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)Not in bottle. Pale colour with a green tint. A lean and lively fruit here, which builds into a white fruit energy, a crisper finish, tightly wound, quite impressive potential. Very millerand, small crop, high skin to juice ratio, which delivers the concentration and the slightly tannic finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)Not in bottle. Medium to bright purple. 50% whole bunch makes a more classic pinot fruit on the nose. Opens out very nicely, slightly more acidity than tannin to make the structure. No great density but pleasingly perfumed with raspberry and rose petals. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023. |
