Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

Fresh mid purple. This also has a fresher quality to the fruit, lively strawberry, I thought of some whole bunches but they were not used. Perhaps not quite the length here of the best in the stable. A little austerity at the back within the context of this vintage. 13.2% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)

A little paler in colour, though not racked, with more red fruit, an attractive more savoury note, even fruit spread across the palate, enough acidity to finish with few tannins in sight. Another version was paler at the edges, a richness of fruit at the front of the palate, and a more gravelly texture behind. Crunchy fruit with some grip. This version, aged in amphora, was never sulphured yet vibrant, and will be blended in to the regular version. Scored for the main version. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

There have been biodynamic experiments in Clos St-Landry for 5 years now. Does that add to the precision immediately apparent on the nose? Mid lemon colour. This is very stylish on the palate with excellent length and clean acidity, light mirabelle notes but otherwise more in pure white fruit. A little cream to finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

More crimson than purple, with notably more presence than the other Beaunes. A range of fruits finishing with some black cherry after the dark red berries, a heightened intensity of fruit, with an excellent balance between tannin and acidity, and notable length. Not racked but has retained purity. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

A dark purple colour. Quite a ripe fruit which could use the cleaning up of a racking, at which time it will have the sulphur adjusted. Dark ripe cherries on the nose. A wealth of fruit at the front end, some tannins but not astringent behind, a dark strawberry fruit to finish. This has the makings of a very good wine once it has finished its elevage and been cleaned up for bottling. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.

(5 Star Wine) The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

Lemon and lime in colour. The most reserved nose of these three (Bouchères, Porusots, Gouttes d’Or), with a well-rounded fruit on the palate, then ripe apple with a touch of plum on the palate. Greater depth of fruit on the palate, something of a dried fruit character according to Frédéric Weber. The aforementioned trio differ in style but are very hard to separate in quality. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted: October 2023.

From the two remaining plots of Perrières after one has been repositioned (see under Puligny Chalumeaux). Attractive fresh fruit on the nose and then the weight of the appellation comes up. Some ripe apples, but then a broader basket of slightly more exotic fruit, that has not been allowed to ripen too far. A fine balanced whole with the power to develop. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

Rich dark purple, not racked, so the nose is a bit edgy at the moment. There is impressive density here, plus some raw tannins, giving a drier finish. No doubting the concentration though. This may just be in a very backward stage. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

Racked 6 weeks ago. Deep crimson, with rich raspberry and strawberry fruit, some tannins but in proportion to the fruit and enough acidity. This is nicely poised, not too ripe, and with good length. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.

A small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.

Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a focused and intense nose: blackberry and raspberry fruit, melted tar, and discrete touches of dried white flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fresh acidity. It’s quite ripe towards the finish, leaning a little too far towards the blacker side of the fruit spectrum at the expense of Pinoté.
