Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Decanter (93)

Domaine Long-Depaquit is the Chablis arm of the Bichot family. Vaucoupin is one of their signatures and in 2022 it shows a great combination of sun-ripened peach fruit on the palate, balanced by zesty acidity and a hint of white pepper. Lovely purity here. Manages to be both powerful and elegant at the same time. Already drinking nicely, this has the concentration to age very well.

Quite subtle and restrained on both nose and palate. Plenty of warmth of fruit, but as yet quite restrained. Lovely, salty, zesty notes promise a lot in the future. Ripe peach fruit characters develop with a few minutes in the glass. This will be a great example of Les Clos once in bottle. Tank sample.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-94)

Glowing primrose colour. Evidently a fleshier wine, that is apparent from the nose. Very classy, a whisper of coconut from the oak, a surge of attractive fruit behind, not too much tension but certainly intensity. Good length with appley notes appearing at the very back. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

Decanter (96)

The unofficial 'eighth grand cru climat', Moutonne is a very exciting wine in 2022. A very sophisticated grand cru with a complex combination of purity, lift and precision on both the nose and palate, freshened with saltiness and iodine notes to finish. Concentrated with ripe fruit character and a lovely balance between power and elegance really lifting this. Wait for several years before broaching. Tank sample, tasted blind.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Mid lemon yellow. There is a little more generosity of fruit on the nose, this is properly ripe though it came in at 12.5%. It does not need any more. A little bacon fat reduction, perfectly balanced through the middle, enough acidity but not trenchant. More nuanced than Referts, on its way to becoming a very fine wine. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023.

Currently in tank, being fined in preparation for bottling. Pale colour with a reductive note. A plentiful exuberant juicy fruit, with some fresh citrus behind. Racy finish, this will be delicious to gulp down. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: October 2023.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has a more backward bouquet than the Les Charmes-Dessus, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The well-balanced palate has a slightly creamy texture, harmonious with grilled hazelnut and almond. There’s a touch of vanilla pod towards the finish from the oak that will be subsumed with time. Very fine.

From vines farmed but not owned. Clear pale lemon. Ripe apples, a light lemon rinse, then a very steely core through the middle, full of energy, racy and stylish at the same time, with a fine long finish. Racked to foudre to finish its elevage. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2023

Benjamin was able to keep the lees after racking as they were so pure and continue to nourish the wine. Very pale in colour. There is plenty of energy here, lemon infused up front, just the right flesh behind, with a long, agile finish. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted: October 2023.

There have been biodynamic experiments in Clos St-Landry for 5 years now. Does that add to the precision immediately apparent on the nose? Mid lemon colour. This is very stylish on the palate with excellent length and clean acidity, light mirabelle notes but otherwise more in pure white fruit. A little cream to finish. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

(5 Star Wine) Pale primrose in colour. Noticeably more majesty here, a greater depth and also a little touch of oak. Halfway at least to Montrachet. An entirely coherent expression with a stunning density of white fruit, and a perfectly integrated acidity. This year the Cabotte is closer to the power of Montrachet, a brilliant wine. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

The Bouchard holding in Le Corton is made up of white marl on top of limestone slabs, and protected by the forest from the evening sun. Pale lemon and lime. The nose is slightly backward, delicate little flowers, but with the correct stony, almost gravelly aspect. Some riper fruit notes putting their heads above the parapet. A significant saline character too, behind. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

(5 Star Wine) The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.
