Burgundy 2021 En Primeur

Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.

Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.

Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-89)

A fine even purple. A nose of charm and delicious, adequately ripe, dark red fruit. Energetic fruit, with a touch of sandalwood, tightly wound with quite high acidity. Just slightly dry at the finish, though compensated by surprising length. Drink from 2024-2026.

Vinous (94-96)

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. This is a lovely Charmes-Chambertin that should evolve wonderfully in bottle.

Burghound (92-95)

Here the more reticent nose isn’t as elegant though it is more complex with its layered blend of red and dark pinot fruit, anise and discreet earth and floral wisps. The supple and highly seductive medium weight flavors possess excellent depth and persistence on the mildly austere finale. This is already appealing and several years of cellaring should only enhance its attractiveness.

Burghound (90-92)

A beautifully layered if more subdued notes grudgingly gives up its earthy dark berry fruit, forest floor and violet scents. The sleek and equally attractively textured medium-bodied flavors possess a relatively refined mouthfeel thanks to the fine-grained tannins shaping the youthfully austere, balanced and lingering finish. This will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my range but it’s quite promising

Vinous (89-91)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of three parcels, though 50% is Au Combe de Dessus. With 20% new oak, it has an attractive wild strawberry and red plum bouquet. Impressive focus. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-tuned tannins, quite vibrant and lively, orange rind and touches of black pepper furnishing the finish. Give this a year or two in bottle.

The 2021 Chablis Fourchaume 1er Cru, which underwent a late malo, has a attractive apple blossom and nettle-scented bouquet. The palate is balanced, fresh, focused and steely with a sharp, quite penetrating finish. Good potential.

The 2021 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru has a small reduction on the nose from a few barrels that had not settled by the time of my visit. The palate is promising with good substance, fine acidity, and unlike some other cuvées, has good grip with more persistence on the finish. Very fine.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has a focused bouquet with Granny Smith apples and citrus peel, touches of nettle and flint. The palate is well balanced with orange pith and light peachy notes, then it becomes more steely and Zen-like towards the finish. I would like more salinity here.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru replaces the Vaillons this year and Billaud's supplier could not deliver - only two barrels-worth. It has a taut and crisp bouquet with green apple and light wild peach aromas. The palate is firm with nice acidity; it's linear and correct with hints of white peach and pear towards the pretty finish. Very fine.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru comes from purchase of juice and represents a couple of barrels (half actually aged in steel). The nose is well defined with fine delineation - hints of white peach and pear emerging. The palate is well balanced, that oak a tad pronounced at the moment, though it will be integrated with time. Fine persistence, this will probably be difficult to find but should give 12-15 years drinking pleasure.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is aged only in vat, although there might be some wood contact late on. Frankly, I hope it doesn't because this has a sense of fullness and some lovely tropical notes discretely interwoven that would make any oak otiose. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, not amazingly complex, but there is decent substance on the finish. Fine.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet and perhaps is the most complete of the Grand Crus from the Domaine. The palate is well balanced with a touch more substance than Les Clos, fine acidity, quite taut and harmonious with good grip and energy on the finish. I can see this ageing nicely in bottle.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru, which will see some cask ageing later on during its maturation, has a finely-tuned bouquet with nettle, granite and light white flower aromas. Good intensity. The palate is well balanced with a sapid entry and fine acidity; it's just beginning to dumb down midway through, so the finish is missing the complexity expressed by the Blanchots. The cask ageing will fill this out a little, so it will be interesting to taste in bottle.

The 2021 Chablis Tête d'Or has a tightly-wound nose with touches of pressed flower and light fern/damp loamy scents percolating through with time. The palate is fresh on the entry with sour lemon and orange rind, quite strict and linear with a brisk, malic finish. Fine.
