Burgundy 2021 En Primeur

Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.

Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.

Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)

From the Puligny side of the appellation. Clear beautiful yellow colour. The nose is discreet but very classy, then this huge wealth of fruit expands across the palate. We can wait for the nose. This is beautifully poised, a little wood, a slight youthful bitterness, but both add to the grip. Long and fine. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: October 2022

(Maison) Louis Jadot Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru offers a touch more complexity and nuance than the Clos-de-Bèze with red berry fruit, orange rind, crushed stone and wilted rose petals. It's a little more delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, again, quite creamy in texture with a bit of new oak on the finish (though there is a prudent use of new wood - one new barrel out of three). Quite seductive, this should age well in bottle, though afford it four to five years at least.

Berthaut-Gerbet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers 1er Cru is reduced to one barrel this year and is the final vintage as the holding will pass to Charles van Canneyt's new enterprise. Gorgeous pure red fruit on the nose, this unfolds nicely in the glass without too much aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine definition, gentle grip with impressive weight on the finish. Very promising.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

954 barrels only from Bouchard’s 2+ hectares, including the La Cabotte section which could not be made separately this year. A touch of coconut and light vanilla sitting on top of the concentrated, mostly white, fruit. A touch of verbena, ripe citrus, even a hint of liquorice. The fruit weight builds at the back. A softer finish than some producers this year. Kicks on a bit more right at the back. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: November 2022

Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, their only vineyard on the north side of Chambolle, includes around 50% whole bunches this year. The stems are discretely enmeshed, present, but allow the fruit and terroir to speak. I admire the freshness and joie-de-vivre here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, vivid black cherry fruit laced with orange zest/blood orange towards its energetic finish. Bon vin.

2021

Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (88-90)

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes mainly from a large parcel in Porlettes with 10% from Les Fuées and Baudes. This was co-fermented instead of blended at the end of the barrel maturation; that was the modus operandi under François Millet. It is the only cuvée that does not include whole clusters. It has a clean and precise bouquet with dark cherries, hints of iodine and iris flower. The palate is tensile and light, well focused with an understated, open blackberry and raspberry finish, a touch of black pepper on the aftertaste. Fine.

Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru Blanc 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (91-93)

Aged in four used barrels, the 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Blanc has quite a pithy, honeysuckle and melted wax-scented bouquet, very different from other Chardonnays (sometimes more like a fine Pinot Blanc from Alsace!) The palate is very well balanced with a slight viscosity, lively, spicy with ginger and lemongrass, very feisty on the finish. Lovely.

Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (95-97)

The 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru underwent a picked piecemeal from the 30 different plots to find the best order that actually was linked to vine age. It has a gorgeous bouquet with brambly red fruit, loam, blood oranges and subtle graphite aromas. Superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh citrus like acidity, tensile and focused. This is a very classic, mineral-driven Musigny with surfeit of salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. So bright on the finish.

A more complex and elegant nose features notes of equally fresh, pure and airy essence of various red berries nuanced with hints of spice and lavender. There is again a really lovely texture to the seductive, generous and vibrant medium weight flavors that conclude in a lightly stony, refreshing and lingering finish where a touch of bitter pit fruit appears. This too is very good.

Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

A slightly more elegant nose primarily consists of the essence of red berries, violet, anise and smoky hints. The succulent but seriously punchy medium weight flavors possess a highly seductive texture thanks mainly to the super fine-grained tannins shaping the lightly austere, stony and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is also excellent and a wine that, while certainly ageworthy, should be approachable after only 5-ish years of keeping.

Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Les Demoiselles 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (95-97)

The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru is a step up from the Bâtard-Montrachet in terms of complexity and mineralité. Yellow plum and pressed flower hints emerge and lend more complexity with time. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity. This Chevalier gathers momentum towards a detailed, lightly spiced finish with just the right amount of extract. The 2021 has real pedigree.

The 2021 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru comes from five lieux-dits. This was slightly more reduced than the Clos Saint-Denis, dark berry fruit, briary; a faint touch of seaweed emerges with time. The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is more backward and surly than the Bienvenues at this stage, less "welcoming". 2021

Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)

Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 La Grande Rue Grand Cru comes from the famed 1.65-hectare monopole of Lamarche on the other side of the lane from Romanée-Conti. It has another light, airy nose, red cherries and a touch of tertiary scents, missing some of the vigour the 2020 exuded last year. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. This is very pure, a tad more weight than the Echézeaux, nicely judged acidity with hints of white pepper and thyme towards the nicely proportioned finish. This should give 12-15 years of drinking pleasure.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

5 Star Wine. A rich dark purple. The nose is astonishing because of its definition. It is a slightly darker and certainly less lushly appealing style. Peppery notes are in balance but the volume of fruit surmounts. This is a fine and very noble example which could well leap ahead of the 2020 in the rankings. There is such a wealth of fruit, on the cusp of red and black, which returns in the very long finish. Bravo. Drink from 2030-2040.

5 Star Wine. An astonishing rich imperial purple colour. Possibly it wins in density over and above the Clos de Vougeot. It doesn’t stun me as much as last year because it is no longer my first experience! An all-enveloping dark raspberry, silky as well as lush, dotted with pepper, with an almost endless finish. Grapes beautifully grown and then seamlessly made. Drink from 2030-2040.

Still in barrel for a longer elevage. 35% new wood. A fine mid purple colour. Here the bouquet is interestingly complex after the pure precision of the Vaucrains. The fruit is of various ripenesses, thus including some darker berry notes. Rich and powerful, obviously not to the degree of a 2020, while there is still a light peppery touch to finish. 2021

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a little more fruit intensity on the nose; it is slightly darker by direct comparison. Fine delineation, quite bold in the context of the vintage. The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is more backward and surly than the Bienvenues at this stage, less "welcoming".

The holding is right in the middle of Bâtard-Montrachet, with rows all the way up and down. Mid yellow. A weighty punchy bouquet, not quite so fine. The 2021 Meursault Clos Richemont 1er Cru shows good depth and pliancy, especially within the context of the year.
