Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos des Guettes Blanc 1er Cru is a little more backward on the nose than its peers, with touches of lanolin and wax resin. The palate is nicely balanced with good weight. It's citrus-fresh with a decent amount of extract lending weight on the finish of a moderate length. This is one cuvée that seems to meliorate in the glass and develops more spiciness on the aftertaste. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune La Dominode 1er Cru feels more constricted at present when compared to the Clos des Guettes. The nose highlights dark plum and raspberry, yet is just missing a little amplitude. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins. The pedigree of the climat comes through here; it's pretty sweet and opulent towards the finish, so it belies the coolness of that summer. Give this a couple of years in bottle because it is a well-crafted Savigny. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)A notably more vibrant colour, fresh purple. This seems very youthful on the nose, not so much definition yet. The wood from this barrel is a bit more present with a dry François Frères type of toastiness. Will need a little time to settle down, but will definitely deliver. I have no qualms about giving the 2021 Champ Chevrey the benefit of the doubt. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2022 |
