Burgundy 2021 En Primeur
Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.
Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.
Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Meursault Chevalières has a pretty nose that unfurls with each swirl: yellow plum and mirabelle and just a touch of crushed stone. Understated at first, it soon finds its voice. The palate is quite sharp and lively on the entry, a touch of sour lemon with a finish that just lacks the complexity of the vintage's top Meursault. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (88-90)Mostly from their own vines and includes some Goutte d’Or this year. Pale to mid lemon yellow. A certain weight on the nose, more than elegance. More classic on the palate with a depth of pear and ripe apple fruit, medium plus length and a good structure for the future. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2022 |

Decanter (93)This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The aromas begin with a hint of lemon peel and white flowers and then opens up to encompass quince, hazelnut, and spice. The beautiful freshness of the year balances out the impressive concentration of the wine to lead to a surprisingly long finish. 2021 is van Canneyt’s fifth vintage of this wine, whose vines were previously worked by Domaine Coche-Dury. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)Clear mid yellow. So much energy here too. An impressively racy quality with plenty of weight, very Charmes in character, strong fruit, and then a crunch of acidity. A little saline touch yet also some of the more exotic side. Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2022 |

Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has the most reduction on the nose of the three Premier Crus, and as such, it is difficult to read the terroir. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, again, a little reductive, but there is certainly plenty of concentration here. It will probably require three to four years in bottle, so be patient. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2021 Meursault Les Grands Charrons has a charming bouquet with yellow plum, vanilla pod and light apricot blossom scents, quite Charmes-like in style. The palate is well balanced with a fresh, slightly tangy entry, orange rind and hints of mango, vibrant in style with a brisk and breezy, elegant finish. Lovely, but I would enjoy this over the first ten years of its life. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)From three sources, all in the upper part. Glowing mid yellow. Lovely weight of fruit here, the oak lending a light coconut touch. There is a proper concentration behind, ripe enough as well, almost a petrol noted, and very persistent. Drink from 2026-2031. |
