Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru, which comes from the Chassagne side, also showed some of the barrel on the nose like the Chevalier, but overall, it seems more primal and less terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with a resinous entry, surfeit with extract, though I am seeking a little more finesse and mineralité on the finish. A little broad-shouldered at the moment.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)

(5 Star Wine) Fine pure lemon yellow. The bouquet starts off rather reserved. A suggestion of immense weight, certainly some new oak, but waiting for the fruit and the personality of the wine to emerge. Now some coconut and the feeling that the wine is about to release its magic. Superbly suave on the palate, more lifted than I expected and still the main core of the wine does not want to be touched. A fine mineral acidity at the finish but still wait and see. Only right at the end does it all start to kick in. A wine of immense density for the very long-term future. Retasting the glorious Cabotte reinforces the majesty of this Montrachet. Drink from 2034-2045+. Tasted: October 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

A pure clear lemon colour. The extra weight of Montrachet is indeed apparent on the nose. Ripe pears. Perhaps this is a little less in the Sauzet style, not being from their own fruit, but it is impressive. The weight on the palate is profound, with certainly ripe fruit but also a point of minerality right in the middle, and good acidity. Almost a wine to eat rather than drink. It does indeed have the requisite very long finish. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: October 2023.

There is real energy and complexity here, orange pith and lemon verbena, touches of lemon curd. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and power, far more than the Bâtard-Montrachet. It has a beguiling length and precision, velvety smooth, with a hint of walnut on the finish. Divine.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a classy bouquet with beautifully defined black cherry and bilberry fruit, an underlying mineralité becoming more evident with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is fresh with finely chiseled tannins and impressive structure, yet finishes harmonious and pure. Bon vin.

Burghound (90-92)

A cooler and airier nose somewhat grudgingly displays its array of various dark berries, especially black raspberry, violet and a hint of wet stone character. The fleshy, rich and nicely textured medium weight flavors exhibit even more minerality on the youthfully austere, compact and serious finale. This balanced effort is textbook Es Chezots and should repay 8 to 12 years of keeping.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2022 Marsannay Blanc Les Longeroies has a backward, slightly reductive, flinty bouquet, suggesting it will benefit from time in bottle. The well-balanced palate is tensile and edgy with a keen thread of acidity. Bitter lemon and orange rind enliven the finish. Good potential.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2022 Marsannay Les Longeroies offers blackberry, wild hedgerow and forest floor scents on the nose, with a faint hint of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit and fine tannins. There is a little compactness towards the finish at the moment, but it is surfeit with freshness and tension. A hint of white pepper surfaces on the aftertaste. What a lovely Marsannay this will be.

Burghound (88-91)

Here the nose displays that peculiar kind of reduction called bourgeon de cassis, or cassis bud, that crowds out more interesting notes. On the palate there is much better freshness and verve to the detailed and stony middleweight flavors that deliver good depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale

Burghound (87-89)

(the name refers to a small tower located just behind the domaine; the fruit comes from 6 different lieux-dits). A more floral-suffused nose presents a range of aromas that include violet, dark currant and black cherry. The very supple and fleshy middleweight flavors possess a seductive texture while exhibiting enough depth and persistence on the balanced finale to be interesting. This too could easily be enjoyed young

Vinous (88-90)

The 2022 Marsannay Trois Terres Vieilles Vignes has discrete touches of fish scale and black olive on the nose, married neatly with the black fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry. Touches of fig and dates tincture the black fruit. Was this picked just a day or two later than optimal? It feels too sweet for my liking and compared to the previous vintage.

The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is one of the most backward reds from Jadot in barrel, but I managed to eke out some attractive raspberry, crushed strawberry and sous-bois aromas that look promising. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well-judged acidity and a surprisingly dense finish just needing to forage a little more mineralité. Good potential, but it will require 3 or 4 year

A mid ruby crimson colour. There is a greater depth of pure red strawberry/raspberry fruit with a suggestion of some grip. Definitely enough structure behind but this is still fruit forward. Very nicely made. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.

One barrel which is by measure – 280 litres, made with new dowels but one year old ends. A fuller yellow, with massive energy, multiple fruits through the yellow and white spectra, yet also rich summer flowers. Impressive density as one would hope, then firm acidity behind, still such a baby, and then suddenly the wine kicks on to another dimension at the finish, with a reprise of all the fruits and a greater sense of harmony. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

From the Couchey end of the appellation, still in barrel. A solid crimson red. 35% whole bunch vinification adds some rose petals to the flavour profile. Otherwise, there is slightly less density than for the Côte de Nuits Villages. Good acidity to infuse the finish. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: December 2023.

Two barrels made. A glowing pale lemon and lime colour. Though the barrels are not new they still lend a touch of coconut to this sublimely opulent Montrachet. The riches are properly balanced on the palate though, with waves of perfectly ripe fruit sweeping through the mouth. Some tropical notes, and lower in acidity to taste, thanks to the power of the fruit. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.
