Burgundy 2021 En Primeur

Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.

Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.

Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Vinous (88-90)

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet le Trézin has a "cool", wet stone and undergrowth-tinged bouquet with flecks of white peach and Conference pear. This is nicely focused. The palate is well balanced, the 20% new oak neatly integrated, cohesive with a light nuttiness towards the detailed, if short, finish. Pretty, but short-term.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Saint-Aubin en Montceau 1er Cru has the most mineralité and terroir expression amongst Colin's three single-vineyard bottlings from the appellation. Here, there is impressive delineation and focus. The palate is well balanced with a sapid entry, taut and fresh; there's crisp acidity with a lemony "bite" on the finish. Delightful.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)

Fresh translucent lemon yellow. The bouquet has charm this year, almost a floral note, and not the roasted stones of the hotter years. Full-bodied, crystalline acidity, quite firm limestone tension, a light lemon wash, and very persistent. Needs time. Drink from 2025-2030.

Vinous (85-87)

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vielles Vignes Rouge, which was taken from vat and aged in 15% new oak, has a pretty nose with red cherry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is well balanced with a soft entry, lightly spiced with a smooth finish that maybe just lacks a bit of complexity, but slips down the throat with ease.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)

Fresh pale lemon. The bouquet has a little more refinement than the St-Aubin, offering apple, fennel and citrus notes. Clean, lean and pure on the nose, extremely refreshing. While there is little reduction on the nose, the finish has a lively mineral limestone feeling. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: December 2022
