2021 |
Chavy-Chouet Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres 2021 (6x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)One single barrel. A pale colour with a light green tint, floral with a green herbal note. A leaner style but with real intensity and a correct acidity behind, with just a little citrus tingle. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: November 2022

2021 |
Chavy-Chouet Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes 2021 (6x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Pale lemon in colour. There is a significant weight of fruit on the nose, just a little riper than the Genevrières. Plenty of fruit weight, some ripe lemons too on top of the white fruit, a fine texture, light acidity and good length. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: November 2022

Chavy-Chouet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2021 (6x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)A slightly fuller lemon and lime colour, with definitely a greater richness of fruit, though remaining in the domaine’s fine-boned style. A sunnier spot has driven the extra ripeness and persistence, while retaining adequate acidity. Certainly, the longest finish. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: November 2022

Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil 2021 (6x75cl)
|
2021 |
Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru was fully de-stemmed and matured in 20% new oak. This has a lovely oyster shell element on the nose, intertwined with lush red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with lightly spiced red fruit, good grip and building weight in the mouth towards an almost Pommard-like finish. Convincing in terms of complexity here.

2021 |
Comte Armand Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Volnay Les Frémiets 1er Cru has exquisite definition on the nose: a mélange of red and black fruit, allspice and light iris flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, more red fruit developing laced with clove and a touch of cooked meats, quite complex towards the finish that lingers in the mouth. Classy and certainly with the substance to age.

Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl)
|
2021 |
Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, their only vineyard on the north side of Chambolle, includes around 50% whole bunches this year. The stems are discretely enmeshed, present, but allow the fruit and terroir to speak. I admire the freshness and joie-de-vivre here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, vivid black cherry fruit laced with orange zest/blood orange towards its energetic finish. Bon vin.

Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 2021 (1x75cl)
|
2021 |
Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 2021 (1x75cl) Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru now comes from a small 0.2-hectare parcel of vines under 25-years old, tucked just below the Musigny Blanc. So there are now just two barrels. It has a beautifully-defined bouquet, much more complex in fact, than the Les Amoureuses with vivid blackberry, raspberry and mineral scents. The palate is very well balanced with saturated tannins, slightly granular in texture with real depth and grip towards the elegant finish. Stylish.

|
2021 |
Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2021 (1x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru, reduced to three barrels (see producer profile) has a fragrant bouquet with ebullient red fruit, hints of cassis, iris and peony. Very fine definition and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with velvety tannins and fine acidity. This is a strict and linear Amoureuses, pure, yet maybe missing the flamboyance that a more benevolent season would bestow. Moderate length. Give it 3-5 years in bottle.

Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 2021 (3x75cl)
|
2021 |
Comte Georges de Vogue Chambolle-Musigny 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (88-90)The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes mainly from a large parcel in Porlettes with 10% from Les Fuées and Baudes. This was co-fermented instead of blended at the end of the barrel maturation; that was the modus operandi under François Millet. It is the only cuvée that does not include whole clusters. It has a clean and precise bouquet with dark cherries, hints of iodine and iris flower. The palate is tensile and light, well focused with an understated, open blackberry and raspberry finish, a touch of black pepper on the aftertaste. Fine.

|
2021 |
Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru Blanc 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (91-93)Aged in four used barrels, the 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Blanc has quite a pithy, honeysuckle and melted wax-scented bouquet, very different from other Chardonnays (sometimes more like a fine Pinot Blanc from Alsace!) The palate is very well balanced with a slight viscosity, lively, spicy with ginger and lemongrass, very feisty on the finish. Lovely.

Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2021 (3x75cl)
|
2021 |
Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru underwent a picked piecemeal from the 30 different plots to find the best order that actually was linked to vine age. It has a gorgeous bouquet with brambly red fruit, loam, blood oranges and subtle graphite aromas. Superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh citrus like acidity, tensile and focused. This is a very classic, mineral-driven Musigny with surfeit of salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. So bright on the finish.

Coquard Loison-Fleurot Clos-de-Roche Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl)
|
2021 |
Coquard Loison-Fleurot Clos-de-Roche Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (93-95)The 2021 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru showed just a tiny reduction on the nose but one can still discern the flinty red berry fruit underneath, and hints of pressed rose petal. The palate is well-balanced with crunchy black fruit, slatey, and quite mineral, that the reduction might accentuate. Persistent on the finish. This is an intellectual proposition in a vintage where that is uncommon.

Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has such a pretty nose that disguises the trauma of the growing season: ebullient redcurrant, white-tipped strawberry and light stony scents. The palate is taut and fresh, just the right amount of countervailing bitterness, with a lively finish. Just a lovely Gevrey.

|
2021 |
Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champonnet 2021 (3x75cl) Burghound (89-92)A more complex and elegant nose features notes of equally fresh, pure and airy essence of various red berries nuanced with hints of spice and lavender. There is again a really lovely texture to the seductive, generous and vibrant medium weight flavors that conclude in a lightly stony, refreshing and lingering finish where a touch of bitter pit fruit appears. This too is very good.

|
2021 |
Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Burghound (91-94)A slightly more elegant nose primarily consists of the essence of red berries, violet, anise and smoky hints. The succulent but seriously punchy medium weight flavors possess a highly seductive texture thanks mainly to the super fine-grained tannins shaping the lightly austere, stony and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is also excellent and a wine that, while certainly ageworthy, should be approachable after only 5-ish years of keeping.

Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs comes from parcels in the north of the appellation with 30% whole bunches. Very impressive intensity on the nose, this is well-defined, crushed stone and citrus scents, the former becoming more prominent with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, pixelated in definition, not powerful but tensile on the steely finish. Excellent.

2021 |
Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Les Demoiselles 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru is a step up from the Bâtard-Montrachet in terms of complexity and mineralité. Yellow plum and pressed flower hints emerge and lend more complexity with time. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity. This Chevalier gathers momentum towards a detailed, lightly spiced finish with just the right amount of extract. The 2021 has real pedigree.

Domaine Fabien Coche Meursault Les Chevalières 2021 (6x75cl) Vinous (87-89)The 2021 Meursault Chevalières has a pretty nose that unfurls with each swirl: yellow plum and mirabelle and just a touch of crushed stone. Understated at first, it soon finds its voice. The palate is quite sharp and lively on the entry, a touch of sour lemon with a finish that just lacks the complexity of the vintage's top Meursault.

2021 |
Dujac Chambolle-Musigny 2021 (6x75cl) Burghound (88-91)There is just reduction present to blur the nuances of the underlying fruit. More interesting are the very fresh and super-sleek middleweight flavors that possess fine intensity while exhibiting ample minerality on the lingering and youthfully austere finale. This is a Chambolle of contrasts as the lacy mid-palate is markedly different from the borderline rustic finale

Dujac Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2021 (3x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2021 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru comes from five lieux-dits. This was slightly more reduced than the Clos Saint-Denis, dark berry fruit, briary; a faint touch of seaweed emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins, harmonious and tensile, again, discretely building with a transparent, lightly peppered finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, one of the most mineral-driven in Dujac's range, precise and detailed, a pinch of spice, harmonious and quite persistent on the finish. A Combottes that feels like a Swiss watch - precise, precise, precise.
