Burgundy 2021 En Primeur

Our annual trip to the Cote d’Or to taste the new vintage is always a highlight of the year. This year felt extra special as travel restrictions that had kept us stuck at home were finally lifted. The 2021 was a reasonably brutal year in Burgundy, with numerous issues that have sadly hammered the production size significantly.

Plainly, 2021 will be a varied vintage and generalising it will be a difficult thing to do. Still, there are indeed some exceptional Pinot and Chardonnay examples that have triumphed over the dramatic vintage. Despite the challenges imposed by the weather, these wines saw a remarkable comeback to the classical style, with very moderate alcohol levels falling between 12.5 to 13.2%.

Careful selection is required for this vintage, and our buying team is pleased to provide more details and insider tips after a fruitful tasting week at Burgundy. Stay closely with us on this exciting campaign!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

Being bottled today. A slightly darker colour here. There’s a good weight of a darker red berry fruit with a slight mentholated touch. The structure is more like a classical central Nuits-St-Georges, with both firmer tannins and a sound thread of acidity. The fruit continues very nicely behind. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: November 2022

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

Still in barrel for a longer elevage. 35% new wood. A fine mid purple colour. Here the bouquet is interestingly complex after the pure precision of the Vaucrains. The fruit is of various ripenesses, thus including some darker berry notes. Rich and powerful, obviously not to the degree of a 2020, while there is still a light peppery touch to finish. However, the clay soils deliver an additional density here. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2022

A more deeply pitched and markedly earthier nose reveals notes of both red and dark currant along with a hint of the sauvage. The rich, velvety and caressing medium weight flavors are almost easy-going and delicate on the delicious and lightly structured finale. This delicious effort is definitely not a classic Nuits but it’s attractive all the same.

Vinous (91-93)

A mixture of 40-year-old vines and vines a century old (the oldest planted in 1915), the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, aged in 25% new oak, is perfumed and floral on the nose, displaying a melange of incense and iris flower with dark cherries and raspberry. Full of joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's quite fleshy and ripe but with underlying mineralité that pushes through on the finish. Excellent.

A fresh and quite peppery nose speaks mostly of red currant and earth. The delicious and wonderfully vibrant lighter weight flavors possess fine definition on the lingering finale that just makes one feel like drinking it. This is built on its fruit but no less interesting for it.

Decanter (92)

This exemplary village-level Chambolle has more stuffing than many, with ripe plummy fruit and notes of earth and mineral. The structure is firm and tannic and shows the vintage's freshness, drawing the wine to a stunning, elegant conclusion. The grapes come from 11 parcels totaling 0.85 hectares in a selection of lieux-dits scattered throughout the village, including Les Cras, Les Nazoires, Les Condemennes, and others. The grapes are mostly destemmed, slowly fermented on native yeasts over 18 days, and will be aged in mainly used barrels over two winters.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is quite open and aromatic on the nose with bright red and black fruit, iris flower and touches of blue fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced with a very fine bead of acidity, blood orange and savoury notes. Quite good backbone here, a Clos de Vougeot that deserves cellaring.

Decanter (93)

This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The aromas begin with a hint of lemon peel and white flowers and then opens up to encompass quince, hazelnut, and spice. The beautiful freshness of the year balances out the impressive concentration of the wine to lead to a surprisingly long finish. 2021 is van Canneyt’s fifth vintage of this wine, whose vines were previously worked by Domaine Coche-Dury.

Decanter (93)

The dark mulberry and cassis fruit have a slightly rustic edge with lovely notes of cigar leaf, mineral, and earth. The texture is dense and tannic, yet there is an elegance as well brought by the fresh acidity that produces a lively feel on the palate and leads to a lingering finish. The grapes come from the 0.70-hectare domaine-owned parcel and are partially destemmed before gentle fermentation and ageing in cask (20% new). The overall effect is closer to the domaine’s wines in Vosne-Romanée, yet there is a touch of muscular Nuits style.

Ripe yet cool aromas include those of cassis, poached plum, an array of spice elements plus a whiff of the sauvage. The very rich and even bigger and more voluminous large-scaled flavors also brim with sappy dry extract before culminating in a balanced, powerful and lingering finish where a touch of bitter chocolate slowly emerges. This isn’t massive in the way that it usually is though it is borderline opulent, which is a descriptor I use very rarely with respect to the 2021 reds.

70% crop achieved, so perhaps the helicopter treatment worked. A deeper dense purple, with a serious concentration of fruit here. The advantage of the vines which were less ravaged. Then darker fruit, almost a chocolate nose, a little foursquare as per its terroir, small waves of darker fruit coming through behind, a dark plum for example, then an evenly balanced finish between fruit, tannin and acidity. Drink from 2030-2040.
