Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

5 barrels made and the malolactic is just finishing, so no sulphur has been added yet. Thus the wine is currently a little broad, with baked apples, and significant flesh on the palate. Though the aromatic side is slightly disturbed, the main body of the wine is all in place, with plenty of energy and persistence. This looks like turning into a very good example. Drink from 2030-2038.In Bond£1,650.00 -

(6x75cl) 2022Burghound (92)
(from the 1er portion of Monts Luisants; an alouette is a lark). Here the expressive nose is comprised by notes of the perfumed essence of various red and dark berries along with floral and anise whiffs. The mouthfeel of the even finer medium weight flavors is enhanced by the presence of evident minerality on the notably more complex and persistent finish that is underpinned by noticeably firmer tannins as well. Excellent. In Bond£1,000.00 -
Burghound (90)
(from vines replanted in 2005 in the villages portion of Monts Luisants). A ripe but fresh and elegant nose combines notes of black raspberry, cassis, anise and violet. The lilting and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess excellent delineation and a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere, sneaky long and well-balanced finale. Lovely and very Monts Luisants in character. In Bond£423.00 -

(Sweet Spot Outstanding) This is also aromatically perfumed with better layering to the spicier aromas of mostly red cherry and rose petal. There is markedly more refinement to the seductively, even generously, textured medium weight flavors that also exude a subtle bead of minerality on the impressively long, balanced and more complex finale. This is excellent and is a wine that could be approached young but reward a decade plus of cellaring. In Bond£877.00 -

(Outstanding) This is also agreeably spicy on the slightly earthier red and dark berry fruit aromas. As is always the case, there is more volume and power to the more concentrated and tautly muscular flavors that aren't nearly as refined on the long, complex and built-to-age finale. As is always the case with the Clos l'Audignac, this is a wine that demands aging and a minimum of 5 to 7 years will be necessary. In Bond£699.00 -
