Vinous (90-92)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru comprises six barrels this year, plus one amphora that may or may not be blended. The barrel sample has a concentrated bouquet of ravishing red berry fruit mixed with iodine and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a slightly chalky texture and a focused, quite Morey-like finish that lingers. There is something serious about this Les Carrières that suggests it will be for long-term consumption. I also tasted the wine from amphora. This has more sheen on the nose, more polish, perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with black cherry and cassis fruit, the fruit profile similar but the texture silkier than the regular blend. There are touches of pain grillé here, and the wood element is just a little more marked on the finish. |

There is good backbone here, and so this will deserve at least four to six years in bottle. Excellent. |

Oops, that's me). The nose was full of rich, red, vitaminy fruit; make that a symphony of red, purple and black fruits. Vibrant, fresh and long, its nose was incredible and had secondary earth aromas. The palate was so 1993 with its wave of t 'n a, cedar, leather and earth. This was finished with its malo but had not yet been racked. Roumier combined the red and white soil components of this wine at the outset but kept one barrel of each separate: on this day, the wine was dominated by the almost painful cut that comes from the white soil but with more time the red soil component will fill in the middle palate. |

Vintage Tastings (96)was a gorgeous example of 1993 but also actually rich in fruit, even more so than the bottle I had four days prior at CRU with Allen at a Roumier dinner (who's in charge of scheduling??? Oops, that's me). The nose was full of rich, red, vitaminy fruit; make that a symphony of red, purple and black fruits. This was finished with its malo but had not yet been racked. Roumier combined the red and white soil components of this wine at the outset but kept one barrel of each separate: on this day, the wine was dominated by the almost painful cut that comes from the white soil but with more time the red soil component will fill in the middle palate. |

As usual, I tasted the Bonnes-Mares from its two main components, and then in the blend, and it was the blend that was most convincing of the three wines.
