The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Mazières will be the last release since the 45-year-old vines were pulled up following the harvest, since they were too degenerated. Matured in 50% new oak, it offers crisp red cherry and cranberry scents on the nose, neatly defined and focused with a hint of wet limestone in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit on the entry, a pleasing saline note running from start to finish with a gentle grip. This is a very commendable valedictory wine

(40% vendange entier; 20% new oak): Musky aromas of dark cherry, boysenberry, minerals and smoked meat. In a juicy, distinctly airy style, even a bit slight in the early going, but this wine also conveys an impression of stem intensity (and extraction) to its flavors of black fruits, flowers and spices. Finishes with firm tannins.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Hautes-Maizières is very fine indeed, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, rich spices, grilled game and dried flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with an ample, layered mid-palate, succulent acids and a long finish.

Good full, bright red. Deep, chalky aromas of dark raspberry, tapenade and saline minerality. A pure expression of soil, showing terrific inner-mouth tension and minerality to the intense flavors of brooding dark raspberry, pepper and spices. This wonderfully vibrant, energetic wine finishes with firm but suave tannins and a repeating peppery accent. Classic 2013 in style, and built to repay aging.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has a lovely, sumptuous, generous bouquet with raspberry coulis, strawberry and cranberry aromas that yell at you, Suchots! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, dark berry fruit here that is tightly wound at the moment, but there is good depth and once it finds its groove, this should turn out to be one of Nicolas Potel's best wines from this appéllation.

(50% vendange entier; bottled in June of 2011, the last '09 to be bottled because this cuvee, says Tremblay, always needs longer elevage to integrate its tannins): Good bright medium red. Serious but discreet nose hints at dark raspberry, licorice and minerals. Concentrated, spicy and minerally but in a rather restrained stage today. Very rich and deep for village wine but will need some time in bottle to absorb some of its substantial ripe, dusty tannins and gain in definition.

Creamy-rich and very ripe but not overly sweet on the palate. A big, strong, somewhat warmer style of wine, quite different in style from the last few samples, and not yet showing the aromatic complexity of the Rouges du Dessus. (100% vendange entier; 60% new oak): Bright dark red. Knockout discreet nose combines raspberry, Oriental spices, rose petal and flinty minerality. Extremely intense in the mouth, with its youthfully imploded flavors of raspberry and saline minerality conveying outstanding definition and energy. The longest of these 2015s so far, finishing with noble building tannins and lovely red berry, spice and crushed-stone perfume. This wine struck me as higher-pitched and redder in its fruit character than the 2014 version at the same stage. There was one more Burgundy on our agenda, a 2003 Rouget Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux. The Rouget had a deep, saucy, concentrated nose, again this grilled endive thing around a core of plum, cassis, soda and liqueur. It was a thick wine, and the second tasty 2003 Burg that I had had on this trip. Rouget alludes to the aromas of his 2006 Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux as tres particulaire, and you can say that again! Cassis, black raspberry, licorice, musk, toasted pistachio, ginger, and white pepper amaze the nose, followed by an implosive palate concentration that incorporates stony, chalky, and somehow ore-like mineral essences. The sense of sappy cling and invigorating, vibratory impingement of spice and mineral matter here left both my salivary and adrenal glands pumping. This fissionable vinous material should be cellared for at least half a dozen years and then vigilantly followed for at least a further decade.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Village was showing a little more wood on the nose compared to the Nuits Saint Georges Village, hints of dried blood infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced, a little grainy with dark berries (bilberry and boysenberry) suffused with sous-bois on the finish. Hopefully it will evolve more cohesion during the remainder of its élevage. There is substance here, but the component parts need to knit together.

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Village was showing a little more wood on the nose compared to the Nuits Saint Georges Village, hints of dried blood infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced, a little grainy with dark berries (bilberry and boysenberry) suffused with sous-bois on the finish. Hopefully it will evolve more cohesion during the remainder of its élevage. There is substance here, but the component parts need to knit together.

In a region with some of the world’s most expensive and sought after Pinot Noir, the appellation of Vosne-Romanee is at the very top of this list, consistently outshining even its most impressive neighbours. Much has been waxed poetic about these wines, which are praised for their intensity, power, finesse, richness, and overall elegance. There are eight Grand Cru vineyards here including Richebourg, Romanee-Saint-Vivant, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, as well as the monopoles La Grande Rue (Domaine Lamarche), La Romanee (Comte Liger-Belair), and Romanee-Conti and La Tache (both monopoles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.)
