Vinous (92)Rousseau's 1988 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is deep, powerful and explosive, with a huge center of fruit and imposing concentration to match. Black cherry, plum, smoke, dried flowers, menthol, licorice and worn-in leather give the wine much of its assertive personality. Although fully tertiary, the 1988 Bèze has enough depth to drink well for another decade, perhaps longer. Next to the best wines in this tasting, the 1988 Bèze is a bit compact, but it is otherwise quite pleasing. |

Wine Advocate (86)PRODUCTION: 1,678 cases. This wine was spectacular from cask, but tasting it three times from bottle has been a bewildering experience. The color is a disturbingly light to medium ruby. The wine's aromatics exhibit oak, smoke, and vanilla, but little fruit. No amount of coaxing or breathing enhances the wine's bouquet, which appears to crack up with exposure to air. There is moderately high tannin and good concentration, as well as a nasty toughness, suggesting a deficiency in flesh, weight, and extraction. Although it was impressive young, it now appears to be a lightweight La Tache. Will it turn around? |

Wine Advocate (90)The 1988 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy was, of course, the debut vintage released under Lalou Bize-Leroy's name. Now at 28 years of age, it is probably beginning its descent from its peak in the 1990s although it continues to give drinking pleasure. Deep in color for the vintage, it offers pleasant cranberry, undergrowth, crushed violet petal and clove aromas that feel a little dimmed by the passing years. The palate is a little chunky compared to more recent vintages that I have tasted, quite tart in the mouth and conveying an almost Bordeaux-like structure on the finish that now feels a little short. Any bottles should be consumed in the near future because it is in gentle decline, albeit from a high peak. Tasted September 2016. |

Vinous (92)Modestly saturated red with an amber edge. Wild, expressive scents of plum, leather and minerals are distinctly more evolved than those of the 1990 Vieilles Vignes bottling. Salty, suave wine with a seamless texture and a repeating leathery note to its flavors of plum, minerals and subtle dried flowers. Quite complex and perfumed in an old-fashioned way, conveying captivating vinosity. Finishes firm and long, with a fine dusting of tannins and lovely rising lift. This will still go on for a while. (13.7% alcohol with chaptalization; the last vintage made by Jean Trapet, the father of Jean-Louis; included a lot of small, late-picked millerandé grapes) |
