Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Meursault Clos-de-la-Barre has a taut nose like the Désirée. Perfumed white flower scents intermingle with yellow plum and citrus peel – very pretty. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and there is plenty of energy here. A twist of sour lemon lends tension toward the finish, and a touch of ginger pops up on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The Echezeaux is one of the best examples of this wine the domaine has made recently. Deep in color (darker actually than the 1985), this wine has an exotic, intense bouquet of plums, oriental spices, oak, and berry fruit. It is, as one would expect, the most forward of their wines, but I would still not opt for opening it until 1993-1994. This is among the few superstars of this vintage, but the 1986 is not for drinking soon-patience is most definitely required.

Vinous (97)

The 1990 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes 1er Cru is an absolutely sensational wine that boasts astonishing detail on the nose, unbelievably fresh considering the warmth of the growing season, the stem addition completely subsumed. Hints of sage and oregano are discretely embroidered into the black fruit, later some gorgeous loam-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, perfect acidity and with just a pinch of black pepper seasoning the black fruit. This is not just well balanced, but conveys an unerring sense of symmetry that leaves you awestruck. With aeration I notice more fruit and just a hint of balsamic towards the finish. Brilliant. Tasted at Tour d’Argent restaurant in Paris.

Good full medium red with an amber edge. Alluring, complex scents of black plum, black raspberry, graphite, violet, dried rose, licorice and musky underbrush, plus some subtle veggie notes of celery seed and beefsteak tomato. Rich, chewy, layered wine without any corners, offering a sexy subtle sweetness and leavening salty minerality to its flavors of dark fruits, flowers and spices complicated by game and underbrush. The wine's broad tannins dust the front teeth on the very long finish. À point right now; in fact, this turned a tad dry with aeration. This fruit was picked at the beginning of October, as in 1995 and 1999. (13.4% alcohol; 3.36 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity)

The 2006 G. Roumier Chambolle-Musigny is deep, perfumed and rather silky, and still relatively youthful, with plenty of life ahead. The tension and purity that is so typical of Roumier’s wines is present in spades here, though clearly this village wine lacks the flesh of Les Cras or Les Amoureuses. Egon Müller makes some of my favorite wines in the world, and therefore, besides buying for my cellar, I always try them on any other chance I get.

Wine Advocate (98)

While I entertained higher expectations of the 1989, it was in fact the 1990 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru that emerged as the wine of the tasting, blossoming in the glass with a complex bouquet of confit lemon, orange rind, dried white flowers, pastry cream, warm bread and vanilla pod. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny textured and enveloping, with broad shoulders, a lively spine of acidity and superb amplitude and concentration, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Powerful and strikingly complete, this is a Chevalier that more than nods to Montrachet in style. But by the numbers alone, it was cropped at 57 hectoliters per hectare and finished up with 14.1% alcohol and pH 3.23. This is by some margin the finest bottle of Leflaive's 1990 Chevalier-Montrachet that I've encountered.
