A remarkable collaboration between Lafite-Rothschild and Catena Zapata, Caro is a wine that combines prestige, prowess, and incredible affordability. Often making it an extremely popular wine with Cru clients.
Dominated by Malbec and blended with 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, Caro 2017 is sourced from prime parcels in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. It is also a fairly rare wine with only 3,000 – 6,000 cases of production each vintage.
The 2017 is tremendously successful, achieving a whopping 97 points from James Suckling who praised its “tight and contracted” structure whilst showcasing “a level of shyness to its strength”. Well supported by Decanter’s Alejandro Iglesias, he awarded the wine a magnificent 96 points and applauded its “velvety feel, rich texture and fine tannin” (DC).
This is one of the most direct and clear Caros in a long time with blue-fruit, violet and sandalwood aromas and flavors. Crushed-stone, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and contracted with a level of shyness to its strength. The length derives from the excellence of the cabernet. One for the cellar. Blend of 74% malbec and 26% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2023, but exciting to drink all the same.
Now in its 16th vintage, this wine, which began in 2000 with a partnership between the Catena and Rothschild families, is a blend of 74% Malbec and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon from Paraje Altamira. It combines Bordelais refinement with the power of the rugged mountain landscape. Aromas of dark fruit and spice precede a velvety feel, rich texture and fine tannins. An eloquent assemblage for collectors.

The path taken over the years by CARO, a joint venture between Catena and Rothschild, has seen some interesting turns, shifting from Luján de Cuyo to the Uco Valley. Today, it is a blend of 74% Malbec and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon from Paraje de Altamira, aged for 12–18 months in French barrels. Bordeaux in style, it is bright purple in the glass and dominated in this instance by elegant woody flavors, revealing hints of plum and violet along with touches of orange petit-fours and bell pepper for complexity. Juicy and malleable, with a texture kept gently in check by active tannins, it delivers a cleansing finish of mint and herbs. A wine with precisely defined flavors in which each detail has been considered at length. Perfectly balanced for cellar aging.
