The wine takes its name from the region’s galets roulés, or large quartz river stones, which are a common sight in Châteauneuf’s finest vineyards. Left by the former path of the Rhône River, these stones absorb heat during the day and release it slowly overnight. This wine comes from the estate’s Clos vineyard, which shares similar terroir and exposition as the plot used for the estate's Les Quartz Châteauneuf. A truly unique site within the humble Côtes-du-Rhône appellation, this site is much more special than its classification suggests.
Made from a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, this fully de-stemmed 'terrific' (WA) 2020 release was matured in demi-muids, foudre and used barriques to limit the oak impact highlight the purity of the fruit. That is clearly on show with the 'seductive' (WA) nose that exudes 'lots of up-front red and blue fruits' (JD), as well as herbal undertones. The palate is 'silky and voluminous' (WA) and has 'good structure, terrific ripeness, and outstanding length' (JD). With no hard hard edges, this is so enjoyable straight away but will also have the capability to age.
The 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Les Quartz (80/20 Grenache and Syrah) has lots of up-front red and blue fruits as well as peppery herbs and spice. All destemmed and brought up in a mix of foudre, tank, and barrels, this medium to full-bodied barrel sample has good structure, terrific ripeness, and outstanding length.

A blend of 80% Grenache (maturing in demi-muids and foudre) and 20% Syrah (in used barriques), the 2020 Cotes du Rhone Les Quartz was entirely destemmed, yet it offers up seductive floral-herbal notes of rose garden alongside raspberries and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, silky and voluminous on the palate, it finishes long and elegant. It's another terrific wine that should prove relatively affordable upon release.
