Once considered one of the first 'second wines' of Bordeaux, when it made its debut back in 1902, Clos du Marquis is now very clearly its own, unique Saint Julien. It has been part of the Delon family holdings since then, and is produced by the same wine-making team, using the same wine-making techniques, as Las Cases. Both Las Cases and Clos du Marquis are vinified in the same facility and are matured in 60% new oak before release.

Made from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Clos du Marquis is the highest-scoring vintage ever. Given the off the charts performance of the Grand Vin, this is hardly a surprise. Clos du Marquis 2016 receives a double 95 points from Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling and quadruple 94 points from the Wine Advocate, Vinous's Neal Martin, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast. Called an “incredibly elegant Saint-Julien", it has the "purity and balance", which is the hallmark of this legendary vintage. It also has the "underlying structure and depth" to last for the long haul. Dunnuck suggests to cellar this until 2057.

Clos du Marquis

About Clos du Marquis Clos du Marquis is one of Bordeaux’s oldest second wines, first produced in 1902. It has been part of the Delon family holdings since then, and is produced by the  same wine-making team, using the same wine-making techniques, as Léoville-Las Cases. Both Las Cases and Clos du Marquis are vinified in the same facility and are matured in 60% new oak before release.   Though Clos du Marquis is produced by illustrious Saint-Julien property, Leoville Las Cases, it is not exactly a 'Second Wine', nor is it a Grand Vin. It is the product of a specific plot on the edge of the Leoville Las Cases estate, bordering on Pauillac and exhibiting excellent and classic Saint-Julien character. Producing firmly structured, age-worthy wines, Clos du Marquis is a complement to the illustrious Delon stable.
