Beau-Sejour Becot 2020 (6x75cl) James Suckling (96-97)This has a fantastic finish with crushed blackberries and raspberries and salt undertones. It’s full-bodied, yet really racy and polished with such fine, intense tannins. Love the length to this. Very distinguished and toned. Excellent energy. 85% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon.

2019 |
Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2019 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (100)Marvelously complex, deeply fruited and massively concentrated yet wonderfully drinkable, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin challenges the number of superlatives that can be thrown at it. Scents of violets, tree bark, truffle, purple raspberries and blackberries all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich, dense and velvety, and the finish shows enormous richness and length. Breathtaking stuff.

2016 |
Clos de Sarpe 2016 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Clos de Sarpe (composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) is a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal provocative Black Forest cake, Chinese five spice and cigar box notes with nuances of sandalwood, kirsch, rose hip tea and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, the palate is oh-so-seductive with a beautiful velvety texture and tons of freshness lifting the decadent fruit to a long spicy finish.

Colombier Hermitage Blanc 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)Pale brilliant gold. Ripe, mineral-tinged orchard and pit fruits on the deeply perfumed nose, complicated by dusty mineral, jasmine and ginger nuances. Shows impressive depth as well as energy; intense Meyer lemon, pear nectar and white peach flavors pick up a hint of smokiness as the wine opens up. Displays real power and repeating pit fruit character on the finish, which lingers with superb, mineral-driven persistence.

Coutet 2020 (6x75cl) Jancis Robinson (17+)Full bottle all of 1,405 g. 95% Sémillon, 4% Sauvignon Blanc, 1% Muscadelle. Cask sample. 18 months in oak envisaged. No information on yield.
Greenish hint to the golden hue. Very classic with a botrytis note and some real freshness. Weight and integrity here with a savoury, even bacon-fat, finish. Not one of the sweetest wines, or what I probably mean is that the acidity is more pronounced than in many of its peers. Sleek and fresh. But probably for relatively early drinking. 13.5%

2019 |
Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous - Neal Martin (96)The 2019 Grand Puy Lacoste, as usual, requires plenty of aeration in the glass. Then boom! You get that gorgeous, classic Pauillac raspberry and blackberry fruit infused with cedar and pencil box scents. The harmonious, poised palate has wonderful focus, very fine tannins and a silky-smooth texture. As I remarked in my previous note, it’s very pliant and persistent, with a graphite-tinged finish. A glorious Grand Puy Lacoste that will need time to assimilate the oak – but hey, GPL lovers know the rules.

Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte 2018 (1x150cl) Vinous (91-93)The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru comes from a parcel that suffers very little hydric stress, according to Laurent Lignier. Including 30% whole bunch and matured with 25% new oak, it has a harmonious bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and light sous-bois aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Quite generous, with a lovely mineral-rich finish. Excellent.

Joseph Roty Bourgogne Rouge 2016 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)The 2016 Bourgogne Rouge has a well-defined bouquet with a lovely floral touch of wilted rose petals that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, quite pure in the mouth with a confit-like, gourmand finish, almost savory in style. What an interesting red Burgundy Roty has made this year.

2017 |
La Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2017 (6x150cl) Wine Advocate (97)The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes derives from parcels planted on classic clay and galets roulés soils. It's 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other varieties. Tight, intense, even clenched, it's in need of several years' cellaring before it becomes truly enjoyable to drink. For now, those gorgeous black cherries are restrained behind a firm wall of tannins. Full-bodied and rich, this is ripe, it just requires patience.

La Mission Haut-Brion 1975 (2x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £720.00
|
1975 |
La Mission Haut-Brion 1975 (2x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)This is undisputably the wine of the vintage, a year that was clearly over-exposed and over-rated, largely because it was better than the four vintages that preceded it. However, it was not terribly exciting in the final analysis. The 1975 La Mission-Haut-Brion, which consistently received perfect scores in its first thirty years of life, remains a vibrant, vital wine. While there are some still gorgeous 1975s (i.e., Petrus, l’Evangile, Trotanoy, Lafleur, and Haut-Brion) that came on much later in life, La Mission possesses enough evidence of greatness to stand alone as the finest 1975. From a cool year with a tiny crop, most 1975s are tannic, dense and out of balance. La Mission’s extraordinary terroir, with its well-drained, gravelly soils fared unbelievably well, and the 1975 was a blockbuster for its first 20-30 years of life. While much of the fat has faded away, the wine still possesses a vitality and vigor that belies its 37 years of age. The color is a dark garnet with just a touch of lightening at the rim. Notes of camphor, wood charcoal, black fruits, plums, cedar, damp earth, truffles, asphalt and smoke result in a fabulous set of aromatics that are nothing short of compelling. Based on the aromatics alone, this offering would merit a perfect score, but some of the nasty tannins in this vintage are beginning to make their presence known on the palate. Nevertheless, this is a freak for the year – very concentrated, dense and remarkably youthful. It will undoubtedly provide extraordinary drinking for another 30-50 years. Nothing about this wine indicates it can’t keep going, although its one-time perfection has faded ever so slightly. This amazing effort is a truly profound wine in another disastrous vintage in Bordeaux!

La Mondotte 2020 (6x75cl) The Wine Cellar Insider (99)Intensely colored, the aromatic profile, with its licorice, blackberry, bitter chocolate, plum liqueur. crushed rocks and stones get noticed quickly. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, full-bodied and ntense. Picture a giant gulp of ripe black plums, blue fruits, licorice, cocoa and broken stones with salt coating your palate and expanding for at least 60 seconds. Not much wine is made here. In fact, the production was about 1,200 cases. Still young, give this stunner at least a decade and drink it over the next 3 decades or longer.

La Tour de By 2012 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (87)An excellent blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, this wine offers attractive value for its superb quality. The wine has a dense ruby/purple color, nice cedary blackcurrant fruit, medium body and surprisingly soft, well-integrated tannins. This sleeper of the vintage should drink nicely for 5-8 years.

Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon 2005 (1x300cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (95)This wine hums with energy, with the tight, floral perfume of chardonnay grown in Puligny, a focus on lime and orange blossoms, an astonishing integration of oak and mineral tension with the fruit. It feels buoyant, a rich beauty that keeps improving over the course of several days. Along with the freshness of the fruit, there's a sense of cool limestone radiating the warmth of the sun. The domaine owns an 11.84-acre parcel of Clavoillon, with vines dating to 1959.

2016 |
Leoville Barton 2016 (12x75cl) Wine Spectator (97)This is so vivid as it brims with pastis-soaked plum, blackberry, black currant and blueberry paste flavors, all carried by a perfectly integrated brambly spine. Tar and ganache notes give the finish an extra kick while everything stays within the mouthwatering roasted apple wood frame. Both regal and rambunctious, this is St.-Julien to a T. Best from 2025 through 2040. Top wine of 2019.

2019 |
Leoville Barton 2019 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (97-99+)The vivid purple, almost blue-hued 2019 Château Léoville Barton is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine that includes 16% Merlot. It will spend 18 months in a mix of new and used barrels. Classic Barton notes of cassis, scorched earth, burning embers, new leather, and violets emerge from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied, massively concentrated, and structured on the palate, yet it has a beautiful elegance as well as a plushness in its texture. Nevertheless, it's not for those seeking instant gratification and is going to need 10-15 years of bottle age to hit maturity. It reminds me of the 1990 and is a great, great wine in the making. If you love Léoville Barton, don't miss this wine!

Marquis d'Alesme 2019 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)From a Margaux estate that has been firing on all cylinders, the 2019 Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker is another winner. Bright, juicy notes of black cherries, framboise, and cassis give way to more spicy oak, chocolate, and dried flower notes. This beauty is medium to full-bodied and has a plush, sexy texture, notable freshness and purity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's one of those pretty, elegant wines that still packs rocking levels of fruit.

Moulin Saint-Georges 2020 (6x75cl) Decanter (94)So full of deeply-drawn berry fruit, fresh and juicy with touches of liquorice bud and rosemary, thirst quenching and yet thirst inducing in that amazing way that limestone can both refresh and make you thirst for more at the same time. An excellent Moulin St Georges, and such a step up from the more sandy soils that you find at Fonbel and the two Simard estates in this year's range of Vauthier-owned wines that this alone can help you understand how to navigate 2020.

Negly La Clape l'Ancely 2016 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)The final blend of the 2016 La Clape L'Ancely is about 85% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache and 5% Syrah. It's perfumed and floral on the nose, with additional notes of ripe raspberries and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, ripe and supple, it's not as dense as the la Porte du Ciel, with redder fruit and a more forward personality. Hints of cocoa show up on the long, silky finish.
