Antinori Badia A Passignano Chianti Classico Riserva 2016 (6x75cl) James Suckling (96)This is a wonderful pure sangiovese with wet earth, mushrooms, pine and cedar with black cherries. Full body. Dense and layered with ripe tannins, yet there’s vivid and energetic acidity. It drives to the end and pulls you in. Top stuff. Drink or hold.

2018 |
Bibi Graetz Testamatta 2018 (6x75cl) Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (100)I loved this when first tasting it in bottle, and it is totally living up to my expectations. The clarity of flavour and the sense of energy ensures it just springs out of the glass, ready to please and without the slightest hint of a dip through the mid palate. Sangiovese signature comes across in raspberry, red cherry, rose petals, tobacco, freshly cured leather, great persistency through the palate, showing balance and finesse. The tannins are fine and silky but not afraid to ask for engagement and time from those of us lucky enough to be tasting it. Fermented with natural yeasts, aged in oak casks and neutral barrels for 20 months.

2015 |
Bond Estates Matriarch Bordeaux Blend Red 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)The 2015 Matriarch is an absolutely gorgeous second wine from BOND that benefits from the diversity of fruit sources that go into the blend. That is quite obvious when comparing Matriarch to The Maiden, the second wine of Harlan Estate, which draws from a more narrow set of parcels. Ripe red and purplish berry fruit, blood orange, mint and floral notes all grace this exquisitely silky, captivating wine from BOND. The 2015 Matriarch is just gorgeous.

Caiarossa 2016 (6x75cl) James Suckling (97)Very complex aromas of crushed berries, yet the fresh herbs, dried berries, sandalwood and Spanish cedar add complexity and brightness. Full-bodied with tannins that melt into the wine. Savory. Cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot with a touch of alicante and sangiovese. Better after 2021.

It goes on and on. I am impressed by the freshness here, as well as the intensity for the vintage. Drink in 2023 and onwards, but a joy to taste now.

Clos de Sarpe 2016 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Clos de Sarpe (composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) is a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal provocative Black Forest cake, Chinese five spice and cigar box notes with nuances of sandalwood, kirsch, rose hip tea and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, the palate is oh-so-seductive with a beautiful velvety texture and tons of freshness lifting the decadent fruit to a long spicy finish.

Colombier Hermitage Blanc 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)Pale brilliant gold. Ripe, mineral-tinged orchard and pit fruits on the deeply perfumed nose, complicated by dusty mineral, jasmine and ginger nuances. Shows impressive depth as well as energy; intense Meyer lemon, pear nectar and white peach flavors pick up a hint of smokiness as the wine opens up. Displays real power and repeating pit fruit character on the finish, which lingers with superb, mineral-driven persistence.

Gaja Sperss 2017 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (98+)From the estate’s property in Serralunga d’Alba, the 2017 Barolo Sperss is fresh with pine, perfectly ripe cherry, leather, and aniseed. It has classic Serralunga structure without being imposing, with ripe up-front fruit of dried raspberry as well as tea leaf, and refreshing acidity on the finish. It is layered with depth, but is remarkably drinkable now. This is a beautiful wine to finish out the Gaja lineup. Drink 2022-2042.

Garmon 2018 (6x75cl) Tim Atkin MW (98)It’s easy to forget that the first vintage of Garmón was as recent as 2014 such is the quality of the wine, but the García family’s longstanding association with the region has certainly contributed to its success Picked 10 days later than the 2017 this is my favourite release yet, combining vineyards aged between 30 and 100 years in Anguix, Baños de Valdearados, Moradillo and Tubilla. Chalky, balanced and effortlessly refined, with notes of red berries, fennel and spice, subtle oak and thrilling freshness. A truly great Ribera.

Glen Garioch (Samaroli) Highland Single Malt Cask No. 1537 2011 (1x70cl)
Inc. VAT: £98.40
|
2011 |
Glen Garioch (Samaroli) Highland Single Malt Cask No. 1537 2011 (1x70cl) Initially this single cask Glen Garioch is restrained, revealing only the most delicate and refined aromatics. Glen Garioch is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, with its origins in 1797 in the Aberdeenshire village of Oldmeldrum. If the heavily sherried styles endemic to Speyside are Cru Classé Bordeaux, then this is 1er Cru Burgundy in its finesse and fine-boned structure. Just 328 bottles filled from Cask 1637 at 45% ABV.
Colour: Bright, polished brass.
Aroma: A fine bourbon-inflected Highland malt with a distant hint of peat. Sandalwood and tobacco smoke, with pear drops and spicy aromas of cinnamon and cardamom.
Taste: Woody, sweet and perfumed on the palate with juicy orchard fruit and a touch of herbal menthol and fennel. The spices continue from the nose with clove and a touch of intriguing mesquite.
Finish: Ineffably balanced and complex with a beautiful flourish of fresh apple and cinnamon on the lengthy finale.

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese 2014 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93+)Ripe tropical fruit aromas such as pineapples and mangoes mingle with coolish stone and smoky aromas on the 2014 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese; this leads to a sweet and piquant palate, with charming fruitiness and concentration. This wine is precise, pure and piquant, revealing a lot of salty stones on the palate, bright fruit flavors and a long, complex finish--again with white peach and nectarine flavors, and a persistent salinity. Great Spätlese.

Joseph Roty Bourgogne Rouge 2016 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)The 2016 Bourgogne Rouge has a well-defined bouquet with a lovely floral touch of wilted rose petals that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, quite pure in the mouth with a confit-like, gourmand finish, almost savory in style. What an interesting red Burgundy Roty has made this year.

2015 |
Klein Constantia Vin De Constance 2015 (6x50cl) Decanter (98)An historical wine, Vin de Constance has been re-established in the last few years as one of the world’s finest sweet wines. Dried Muscat grapes are aged for three years before bottling, in French and Hungarian casks with a touch of acacia wood. Citrus, orange zest, rosewater and spice notes leap out of the glass. The palate has a laser-like focus with massive sweetness perfectly balanced by acidity and a mineral finish. As impressive as Château d’Yquem (and considerably better value).

La Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2017 (6x150cl) Wine Advocate (97)The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes derives from parcels planted on classic clay and galets roulés soils. It's 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other varieties. Tight, intense, even clenched, it's in need of several years' cellaring before it becomes truly enjoyable to drink. For now, those gorgeous black cherries are restrained behind a firm wall of tannins. Full-bodied and rich, this is ripe, it just requires patience.

La Mission Haut-Brion 1975 (2x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £720.00
|
1975 |
La Mission Haut-Brion 1975 (2x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)This is undisputably the wine of the vintage, a year that was clearly over-exposed and over-rated, largely because it was better than the four vintages that preceded it. However, it was not terribly exciting in the final analysis. The 1975 La Mission-Haut-Brion, which consistently received perfect scores in its first thirty years of life, remains a vibrant, vital wine. While there are some still gorgeous 1975s (i.e., Petrus, l’Evangile, Trotanoy, Lafleur, and Haut-Brion) that came on much later in life, La Mission possesses enough evidence of greatness to stand alone as the finest 1975. From a cool year with a tiny crop, most 1975s are tannic, dense and out of balance. La Mission’s extraordinary terroir, with its well-drained, gravelly soils fared unbelievably well, and the 1975 was a blockbuster for its first 20-30 years of life. While much of the fat has faded away, the wine still possesses a vitality and vigor that belies its 37 years of age. The color is a dark garnet with just a touch of lightening at the rim. Notes of camphor, wood charcoal, black fruits, plums, cedar, damp earth, truffles, asphalt and smoke result in a fabulous set of aromatics that are nothing short of compelling. Based on the aromatics alone, this offering would merit a perfect score, but some of the nasty tannins in this vintage are beginning to make their presence known on the palate. Nevertheless, this is a freak for the year – very concentrated, dense and remarkably youthful. It will undoubtedly provide extraordinary drinking for another 30-50 years. Nothing about this wine indicates it can’t keep going, although its one-time perfection has faded ever so slightly. This amazing effort is a truly profound wine in another disastrous vintage in Bordeaux!

La Tour de By 2012 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (87)An excellent blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, this wine offers attractive value for its superb quality. The wine has a dense ruby/purple color, nice cedary blackcurrant fruit, medium body and surprisingly soft, well-integrated tannins. This sleeper of the vintage should drink nicely for 5-8 years.

Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon 2005 (1x300cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (95)This wine hums with energy, with the tight, floral perfume of chardonnay grown in Puligny, a focus on lime and orange blossoms, an astonishing integration of oak and mineral tension with the fruit. It feels buoyant, a rich beauty that keeps improving over the course of several days. Along with the freshness of the fruit, there's a sense of cool limestone radiating the warmth of the sun.
