2016 |
Joseph Roty Bourgogne Rouge 2016 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)The 2016 Bourgogne Rouge has a well-defined bouquet with a lovely floral touch of wilted rose petals that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, quite pure in the mouth with a confit-like, gourmand finish, almost savory in style. What an interesting red Burgundy Roty has made this year.

2015 |
Klein Constantia Vin De Constance 2015 (6x50cl) Decanter (98)An historical wine, Vin de Constance has been re-established in the last few years as one of the world’s finest sweet wines. Dried Muscat grapes are aged for three years before bottling, in French and Hungarian casks with a touch of acacia wood. Citrus, orange zest, rosewater and spice notes leap out of the glass. The palate has a laser-like focus with massive sweetness perfectly balanced by acidity and a mineral finish. As impressive as Château d’Yquem (and considerably better value).

La Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2017 (6x150cl) Wine Advocate (97)The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes derives from parcels planted on classic clay and galets roulés soils. It's 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other varieties. Tight, intense, even clenched, it's in need of several years' cellaring before it becomes truly enjoyable to drink. For now, those gorgeous black cherries are restrained behind a firm wall of tannins. Full-bodied and rich, this is ripe, it just requires patience.

La Mission Haut-Brion 1975 (2x75cl)
Inc. VAT: £720.00
|
1975 |
La Mission Haut-Brion 1975 (2x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)This is undisputably the wine of the vintage, a year that was clearly over-exposed and over-rated, largely because it was better than the four vintages that preceded it. However, it was not terribly exciting in the final analysis. The 1975 La Mission-Haut-Brion, which consistently received perfect scores in its first thirty years of life, remains a vibrant, vital wine. While there are some still gorgeous 1975s (i.e., Petrus, l’Evangile, Trotanoy, Lafleur, and Haut-Brion) that came on much later in life, La Mission possesses enough evidence of greatness to stand alone as the finest 1975. From a cool year with a tiny crop, most 1975s are tannic, dense and out of balance. La Mission’s extraordinary terroir, with its well-drained, gravelly soils fared unbelievably well, and the 1975 was a blockbuster for its first 20-30 years of life. While much of the fat has faded away, the wine still possesses a vitality and vigor that belies its 37 years of age. The color is a dark garnet with just a touch of lightening at the rim. Notes of camphor, wood charcoal, black fruits, plums, cedar, damp earth, truffles, asphalt and smoke result in a fabulous set of aromatics that are nothing short of compelling. Based on the aromatics alone, this offering would merit a perfect score, but some of the nasty tannins in this vintage are beginning to make their presence known on the palate. Nevertheless, this is a freak for the year – very concentrated, dense and remarkably youthful. It will undoubtedly provide extraordinary drinking for another 30-50 years. Nothing about this wine indicates it can’t keep going, although its one-time perfection has faded ever so slightly. This amazing effort is a truly profound wine in another disastrous vintage in Bordeaux!

La Mondotte 2020 (6x75cl) The Wine Cellar Insider (99)Intensely colored, the aromatic profile, with its licorice, blackberry, bitter chocolate, plum liqueur. crushed rocks and stones get noticed quickly. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, full-bodied and ntense. Picture a giant gulp of ripe black plums, blue fruits, licorice, cocoa and broken stones with salt coating your palate and expanding for at least 60 seconds. Not much wine is made here. In fact, the production was about 1,200 cases. Still young, give this stunner at least a decade and drink it over the next 3 decades or longer.

La Tour de By 2012 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (87)An excellent blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, this wine offers attractive value for its superb quality. The wine has a dense ruby/purple color, nice cedary blackcurrant fruit, medium body and surprisingly soft, well-integrated tannins. This sleeper of the vintage should drink nicely for 5-8 years.

Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon 2005 (1x300cl) Wine & Spirit Magazine (95)This wine hums with energy, with the tight, floral perfume of chardonnay grown in Puligny, a focus on lime and orange blossoms, an astonishing integration of oak and mineral tension with the fruit. It feels buoyant, a rich beauty that keeps improving over the course of several days. Along with the freshness of the fruit, there's a sense of cool limestone radiating the warmth of the sun. The domaine owns an 11.84-acre parcel of Clavoillon, with vines dating to 1959.

2016 |
Leoville Barton 2016 (12x75cl) Wine Spectator (97)This is so vivid as it brims with pastis-soaked plum, blackberry, black currant and blueberry paste flavors, all carried by a perfectly integrated brambly spine. Tar and ganache notes give the finish an extra kick while everything stays within the mouthwatering roasted apple wood frame. Both regal and rambunctious, this is St.-Julien to a T. Best from 2025 through 2040. Top wine of 2019.

2019 |
Leoville Barton 2019 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (97-99+)The vivid purple, almost blue-hued 2019 Château Léoville Barton is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine that includes 16% Merlot. It will spend 18 months in a mix of new and used barrels. Classic Barton notes of cassis, scorched earth, burning embers, new leather, and violets emerge from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied, massively concentrated, and structured on the palate, yet it has a beautiful elegance as well as a plushness in its texture. Nevertheless, it's not for those seeking instant gratification and is going to need 10-15 years of bottle age to hit maturity. It reminds me of the 1990 and is a great, great wine in the making. If you love Léoville Barton, don't miss this wine!

Marquis d'Alesme 2019 (6x75cl) Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)From a Margaux estate that has been firing on all cylinders, the 2019 Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker is another winner. Bright, juicy notes of black cherries, framboise, and cassis give way to more spicy oak, chocolate, and dried flower notes. This beauty is medium to full-bodied and has a plush, sexy texture, notable freshness and purity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's one of those pretty, elegant wines that still packs rocking levels of fruit.

Montepeloso Gabbro 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (95)The 2015 Gabbro is deep and richly textured, and yet also remains light on its feet. Pliant and enveloping, the 2015 is super-refined. Blackberry jam, crème de cassis, mint, licorice and lavender infuse this nuanced, expressive Tuscan Cabernet Sauvignon. Stylistically, the 2015 is quite a bit different from the more bombastic wines that have been made here in the past. A bit light, but super-finessed. I can't wait to see how it ages.

An excellent Moulin St Georges, and such a step up from the more sandy soils that you find at Fonbel and the two Simard estates in this year's range of Vauthier-owned wines that this alone can help you understand how to navigate 2020.

Negly La Clape l'Ancely 2016 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (95)The final blend of the 2016 La Clape L'Ancely is about 85% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache and 5% Syrah. It's perfumed and floral on the nose, with additional notes of ripe raspberries and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, ripe and supple, it's not as dense as the la Porte du Ciel, with redder fruit and a more forward personality. Hints of cocoa show up on the long, silky finish.

Some slate and graphite, too. It’s full-bodied, yet ever so balanced and refined, with super fine tannins that last for minutes. Fresh herbs, such as bay leaf and lemon grass highlight the dark fruit. The quality of tannin is exquisite with wonderful polish and refinement. Lasts for minutes. Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2018 (6x75cl) James Halliday (99)72% Tasmania (predominantly Central Highlands and Coal River Valley, with a little Derwent Valley), 22% Tumbarumba (for minerality and linearity), 6% Adelaide Hills (for richness); matured eight months in 60% new French oak barriques. An ultra-cool climate blend of Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills fruit wastes no time in setting the terms of engagement with a wine of infinite class. The flinty/smoky aromas introducing an almost painful intensity on the mercurial palate, a celebration of white-fleshed stone fruits. It has made light work of 8 months in 100% new French oak. Struts its stuff without a care in the world.

2019 |
Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2019 (6x75cl) James Halliday (98)57/32/11% Tasmania/Tumbarumba/Adelaide Hills fruit. Matured 8 months in 55% new French oak barriques. The tension, endurance and sheer molecular detail of Yattarna propels it to the pinnacle of Australia’s pointy chardonnay pyramid, and 2019 follows confidently in the hallowed footsteps of the sublime 2018. This is a vintage that demands a great deal of time to unfurl. Tight, compact, focused and immensely determined, it leads out in its virile youth with the finest struck flint and gunpowder. A pinpoint singularity of white-fruit precision focuses a laser line of pure white acidity that projects from its core through a finish of astounding line, length and promise. Powder-fine, crystalline minerality surges long and strong. Another epic Yattarna. Vintage on vintage, has Yattarna now ascended to become Penfolds' greatest wine of all?

2016 |
Produttori del Carema Riserva 2016 (6x75cl) Vinous (95)The 2016 Carema Riserva is another knock-out effort from the Produttori di Carema, the local cooperative that has really been on fire these last few vintages. Open-knit and inviting, but with all the complexity that is so typical of the appellation, the 2016 is superb. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet tobacco, cedar and licorice are all woven together in a super-expressive Carema that offers tons of complexity in a relatively accessible style for a young wine from the appellation. The Riserva is a selection of the best casks in the cellar, with the wine aged for an added year in cask, so three years’ in neutral oak in total. That extra year in oak vis-à-vis the Classico does take with it some of the fruit while emphasizing more savory and mineral qualities. Power and finesse come together so well in this textbook Carema.

Rieussec 2019 (4x75cl) Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)The 2019 Rieussec is absolutely gorgeous. Gracious and supremely elegant in feel, the 2019 is immediately impressive. An exotic melange of lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, passionfruit and tangerine oil opens effortlessly. The 2019 is compelling from start to finish. Harvest took place from October 8 to 15, in three passes. The 2019 is the first vintage that will be offered in a stylish new bottle. It is no secret Sauternes has struggled of late. I must say I really liked the new and very modern presentation, which shows a more playful side of Sauternes that might just work in creating a bit more excitement around these wines.
