Vinous (94-96)

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru is aged with 50% whole bunches in 80% new oak. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, though despite that this seems impressively defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied, more expressive with fine-boned tannins, taut and fresh, quite intense (as you would expect from a Richebourg). I appreciate the manner in which it builds and exerts insistent grip and structure on the finish. Serious.

Vinous (97-99)

The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is even darker than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a spectacular bouquet of intense black fruit, blueberries and shucked oyster shells, the mineralité heightened over the Bonnes-Mares and lending a great deal of precision. The palate is medium-bodied with blueberry, boysenberry and black currant fruit, extraordinary tension, razor-sharp acidity and a dash of white pepper on the crystalline finish. One of the finest Musignys I have tasted from barrel at de Vogüé.

Jancis Robinson (18.5)

Aromatically this is very typically 2011, with a leafy, sappy quality that recalls the 2004s in their youth. A little shrouded in oak at first, a surge of underlying fruit can be coaxed out with much swirling. The palate is just starting to coalesce. Tense and limy, yet monumental, ripe, apricot-laden underneath, there is nothing ‘minor vintage’ about this.

Mid-pale lemon. Citrus, apple, with touch of vanilla and baking spice on the nose. Volume, mass and flesh on the palate. Toasty wood too. Broad and deep with no excess fat. Powerful and forceful. Fresh acidity holding the edges.

Vinous (94+)

Bright medium red. Deep, musky nose combines cranberry, raspberry, cardamom, faded rose and crushed stone. Sweet, seamless and energetic, offering almost painful cut to the tart red berry, spice and musky underbrush flavors. Outstanding savory lift in the middle palate. Wonderfully lightness of touch here. Very backward wine with all the Cos de Bèze food groups: red fruits, minerals, spices, flowers, crushed stone. Stains the palate and leaves the taste buds quivering on the very long, firm finish. But still a baby today and in need of a decade of cellaring.

Mid ruby. Bright red and black fruits. Red cherries, cassis, very ripe redcurrants. Breadth and volume on the palate. Fuller, riper fruits than the Clos de Bèze. Spicy complexity from the oak already, but its early in the élevage. Not a brutal Corton of yore. Full of promise.

Burghound (97)

A softly exotic nose blends notes of lavender, acacia and spice along with hints of orange and lemon zest. There is excellent concentration to the powerful broad-shouldered flavors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that buffers the chiseled, precise and super-saline finish. This is a breathtakingly good Bâtard though note well that it’s indisputably built to reward extended cellaring.

The Argonne 2015 unfurls with pure notes of poached white peach, Meyer lemon confit, dried orange peel, honey wafer biscuits, marzipan, and toast. Vinified in new Argonne oak barrels, it is a 100% Aÿ fruit from five plots and a predominantly Pinot Noir (90%) with a 10% dash of Chardonnay. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is opulently textured around red fruit, spiced pear, hints of orange peel and mouthwatering salinity. It possesses a pulsating acid energy throughout and finishes long with oodles of honeyed notes.

Henri Giraud’s MV18 has a seductive nose with rich, gently oxidative aromas of spiced baked apples, peach cobbler, kumquats, almonds and spun honey. Medium to full-bodied and centered on precise, textured fruit concentration, it has a generous, mouthwatering palate trussed with fine threads of sizzling acidity and pure mineral freshness. It finishes long and elegantly. This opulent, barrel fermented style of champagne draws on a dearth of perpetual reserve wines to bring depth, power and finesse to the glass.

Here too a discreet application of wood is present on the equally cool, wonderfully pure and exceptionally pretty aromas of essence of red currant, violet, lavender and a hint of earthiness. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate density to the intense and sleek mouthfeel that is again thanks to the polished tannins supporting the focused and sneaky long finish. As is often the case with the Lignier Charmes, it is a combination of power and finesse.

The 2021 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru has a very focused, mineral-rich bouquet with intense red fruit laced with rose petal, blood oranges and graphite (though this ebbs with aeration). The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins, impressive density, very minerally with superb transparency towards the linear finish. Wonderful.

In the middle of the vineyard. Terres rouges and terres blanches. Small parcel so assembled from the start. Barrel sample. Seductive aroma but in a much richer style than the Clos de la Maréchale. Smells deep and seductive. A perfume I would love to be enveloped in. Sour red cherry and a touch of orange as well as floral. Complex and expressive. Beauty of fruit purity on the palate, like biting into a perfect red cherry, crunchy but sweet and tangy. The tannins are spicy and refined. A complete wine with succulence, fine-boned structure and intensity though not apparently dense.

Cask sample. Glowing ruby. Some really savoury undertow keeps this interesting! Polished tannins and some stoniness. Lots of pinched tannins but that’s not a bad thing. Gives it interest and pace. A more restrained nose features ripe aromas of both white and yellow orchard fruit, and in particular white peach and apricot, along with wisps of citrus peel and acacia blossom. There is once again a succulent and seductive mouthfeel to the bigger-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of sappy dry extract before terminating in a powerful and impressively persistent finish. Like several of the wines in the range, the 2018 Bâtard would benefit from developing more depth but given the probable aging curve, that should be feasible.

Here the equally expressive nose is quite similar to the Pucelles if perhaps just a bit spicier. Don't miss! Here too there is a whiff of honeysuckle and more floral elements on the ripe and fresh nose of mostly citrus confit, spice and essence of pear. The medium weight flavors are not quite as concentrated though the sophisticated texture is even finer while displaying even better length on the equally well-balanced. This is stunningly good and while it could use a bit more depth, overall this beauty is a knockout.

From grapes picked in the Le Leon area, a single-plot vineyard covering 2.5 hectares, the 2014 Le Léon extra brut from Philipponnat has a gorgeous, fresh bouquet with aromas of white pepper, spring flowers, red berries, pear, white fruits and menthol intertwined with vanilla and spice notes. Barrel sample. Greyish deep crimson. Like the Échezeaux, this smells of luxury but here it is darker and a little more oaky on the nose, very dark fruit profile.
