Vinous (94-96)

There is just one barrel of the 2021 Montrachet Grand Cru this year. This oak comes through quite strongly at the moment, especially compared to the Chevalier alongside, though there is obviously real power and intensity here. The palate is very well-balanced and multi-layered with gorgeous yellow fruit, crushed stone and hints of lemongrass toward the finish. This seems to really fill the mouth with flavour, though it deserves four to five years in bottle. Maybe I just prefer the more nuanced Chevalier.

The 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru L’Avizoise, from old vines in the Les Robards and Voie d'Epernay lieux-dits, is a wonderfully complex wine. Rich, ample and mineral but also intensely perfumed, the Avizoise has so much going on. Vinification in oak and aging on the cork seems to really bring out soft contours to match the wine's sculpted, translucent feel. This is an especially refined, aromatic expression of Avize, and also one of the most sublime, elegant wines I have tasted from Pascal Agrapart. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

Lively and vibrant red fruits of wild strawberries and red cherries followed by rose hips, ground spices and a touch of citrus zest. Medium-bodied, finely grained velvety tannins with a delightful acid backbone. Zesty and layered wine with beautiful balance and complexity. It’s already enjoyable but will age gracefully.

Nestled in the esteemed vineyards of La Morra in Piedmont, Italy, lies the prestigious Boggione family estate, the birthplace of the majestic Boggione Barolo Brunate 2014. Elegant and full-bodied, this Nebbiolo wine captures the quintessence of the 2014 harvest, personifying the artistry of the winemaker Claudio Boggione. The wine is aged for a minimum of 36 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels, emerging with a ruby-red hue and complex layers of depth.

The Boggione Barolo Brunate 2014 exhibits an aromatic profile of ripe red fruits, complex spices, and delicate undertones of soft velvety tannins, completed by an extraordinarily persistent finish. It's termendously tasty and notable for its long-life structure, making it highly collectible for wine connoisseurs. Its origin, the Brunate cru, is globally recognised as one of the best terroirs for the production of Barolo. Sipping the Boggione Barolo Brunate 2014 is an encounter with the soulful poetry of Italy's most cherished wine regions.

Light yellow. Deep, sexy scents of lemon drop, peach, white plum, honeysuckle and earth, complicated by a nutty leesy quality. Fat and deceptively sweet on entry, then citrus peel and mineral flavors give definition and energy to the middle palate and grip to the finish. The initial sensation of plushness disappeared in an instant but then returned with aeration. This is ultimately a firm, well-delineated, mineral-driven Chenin with spine and some aging potential. In fact, I'd give it another year to knit--and to lose its nagging slight hardness.

The 2012 Barolo Garblèt Sue’ is the most linear and sinewy of these wines. Bright red cherry, pomegranate, orange peel and white pepper are some of the notes that emerge, but once again, the Garblèt Sue’ is mostly identified by its overall structural feel. Intense and long on the palate, but with a bit less mid-palate richness, the Garblèt Sue’ is another strong effort from Brovia. As always, the Garblèt Sue’ is a bit rustic, especially in its tannins.

As always, the 2012 Barolo Villero is a bit more pointed and focused than the Rocche, with veins of tannin and acidity that give the wine much of its shape. Beautifully delineated throughout, the Villero is laced with deep layers of spice, dried flowers, mint and licorice. This is one of the more inward, introspective wine of the vintage, as it always is at Brovia. Today, the fruit lies in the background, while the wine's structural components are front and center. Readers should be prepared to give the Villero at least a few years in bottle.

Cecilia Monte's 2014 Barbaresco Serracapelli is a wine of pure and total refinement. Lifted and gracious on the palate, the 2014 is wonderfully energetic from start to finish. Beams of supporting acidity and tannin give the wine a nervous, edgy feel that will soften with bottle age. Orange peel, exotic spice, tobacco, cedar and amaro herbs add an intriguing upper register of aromatics to this mid-weight, classically proportioned Barbaresco. Cecilia Monte's Barbaresco Serracapelli is one of the dark horses of the vintage.

The 2012 Elevation 393 is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine spent 23 months in new French oak and underwent spontaneous fermentation. The nose begins with complex dark fruits, smoky tones with a black spice and a fine dusty minerality, which Stellenbosch typically lends to a wine. There are bitter black tea and herbal notes that are expressed over the mid-palate and meshes well with the dark fruit and spice notes here. The finish is long and full-bodied, with a tight tannic grip. 3,504 bottles were bottled by hand, unfiltered and unfined.

The 2012 Merlot comes half from the estate and half from Keermont. It has a light blackberry and raspberry bouquet that feels a little timid and needs more vigor. The 2012 Syrah 393 is de-stemmed and crushed gently, undergoing malolactic fermentation in the barrel. It has a tightly wound, mint-fresh, more floral bouquet compared directly to the 2012 Blueprint Syrah. The palate is well balanced with slightly lighter and more tensile tannin structure, brisk and lively with moderate depth. It offers vibrant black fruit towards the finish and a lingering balsam aftertaste, completing a well-crafted Syrah that should give 8-10 years of pleasure.

A worthy successor to the super 2008, Delamotte's 2012 Blanc de Blancs is performing very well—despite the fact that it was disgorged as recently as June 2019. Opening in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, dried white flowers, smoke and wheat toast, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a bright girdle of acidity, well-integrated dosage and a fine mousse, the muscularity of the vintage rendered with uncommon finesse. While this is quite expressive for such a recently disgorged vintage Delamotte, the rewards of even only a few years' patience will be considerable.

Delamotte's just-released 2014 Blanc de Blancs has turned out very well indeed, opening in the glass with scents of citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit, fresh bread and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and incisive, with excellent depth at the core, racy acids and a chalky finish, this isn't as muscular as the 2008 or 2012, but it has real cut and persistence and should age very gracefully indeed.

Vinous (85)

The 2012 Merlot comes half from the estate and half from Keermont. It has a light blackberry and raspberry bouquet that feels a little timid and needs more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with dusky red berry fruit, soft texture and moderate acidity, the one-third new oak neatly used, but it needs more vigor and vivacity on the tertiary finish.

Wine Advocate (91)

The 2012 Syrah 393 is de-stemmed and crushed gently, undergoing malolactic fermentation in the barrel. It has a tightly wound, mint-fresh, more floral bouquet compared directly to the 2012 Blueprint Syrah. The palate is well balanced with slightly lighter and more tensile tannin structure, brisk and lively with moderate depth. It offers vibrant black fruit towards the finish and a lingering balsam aftertaste, completing a well-crafted Syrah that should give 8-10 years of pleasure.

Wine Advocate (94+)

Wine Advocate (94)

Delamotte's just-released 2014 Blanc de Blancs has turned out very well indeed, opening in the glass with scents of citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit, fresh bread and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and incisive, with excellent depth at the core, racy acids and a chalky finish, this isn't as muscular as the 2008 or 2012, but it has real cut and persistence and should age very gracefully indeed.
