Canon 2020 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98-100)

The 2020 Canon is a blend of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, aging for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. It weighs in with 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.53. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts from the glass with vivacious notes of Morello cherries, redcurrant jelly, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus hints of powdered cinnamon, clove oil, star anise and dusty red soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is an exercise in grace, delivering exquisitely ripe, finely pixilated tannins and bold freshness to support the tight-knit black, red and blue fruit layers, finishing long with loads of exotic spices and mineral sparks. An exhilarating triumph!

Chapoutier Ermitage De L'Oree Blanc 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Moving to the three single vineyard Hermitage Blancs, these are all perfect wines yet offer distinct characters. The 2019 Ermitage De L’Orée comes from more limestone soils in the Les Murets lieu-dit, on the eastern side of the appellation and was brought up in 15% new demi-muids. It reveals a vivid gold hue to go with gorgeous honeyed peach, white currants, quince, crushed stone, and white flower-like aromas and flavors. This full-bodied white has terrific concentration, a rich, layered mouthfeel, beautiful acidity, and a finish that just won't quit. Offering more fat and opulence than the L'Ermite and more minerality than the Le Meal, this pinnacle Hermitage Blanc needs a year or three of bottle age, then should drink nicely for 5-7 years, at which point it's best forgotten in the cellar for another decade. It should last for 20-30 years.

Chapoutier Ermitage L'Ermite 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (98-100)

Coming from vines just above the Le Méal and around the Chapel, the 2019 Ermitage L’Ermite is 100% Syrah that was brought up in just 20% new French oak. It's a massive wine by any measure and reveals a dense ruby/blue hue as well as incredible smoked meats, cassis, graphite, white flowers, and a liquid rock-like minerality. These all carry to a full-bodied, pedal-to-the-metal Hermitage that has building tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and incredible length, all while staying light on its feet and flawlessly balanced. It shares some similarities to the 2018 yet might be even more concentrated.

Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (97-99)

Massive red and black fruits, smoked meats, graphite, asphalt, licorice, and ground pepper notes all soar from the 2019 Ermitage Le Méal, which is 100% Syrah from the more loess soils and full-south facing Méal lieu-dit. This puppy is locked and loaded on the palate, with a huge, rich, mouthfilling style, ripe tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish.

Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal Blanc 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

The richest and most fruit loaded of the trio is the 2019 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc, which comes from a warmer terroir. This killer Hermitage Blanc has a vivid gold hue as well as a crazy good nose of quince, honeyed currants, acacia flowers, spice, and orange marmalade. It doesn't have the minerality of the L'Ermite (and to a lesser extent, the De l’Orée) yet has a more opulent, fat, unctuous style that's still flawlessly balanced and remarkably pure. This is another magical Hermitage from Chapoutier that does everything right. I followed this bottle for multiple days and it only improved with air. It's certainly the more early drinking of these three single vineyard releases, yet it still deserves 2-4 years of bottle age and should keep for 30 years or more.

Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 1994 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 1994 Ermitage Le Pavillon (Chapoutier drops the H out of respect for the ancient spelling of Hermitage) is another blockbuster, phenomenally concentrated wine. Le Pavillon is generally among the top three or four wines of France in every vintage! The 1994's opaque purple color, and wonderfully sweet, pure nose of cassis and other black fruits intertwined with minerals, are followed by a wine of profound richness, great complexity, and full body. It is almost the essence of blackberries and cassis. There is huge tannin in this monster Ermitage, that somehow manages to keep its balance and elegance. Made from a parcel of vines (which I have walked through), some of which pre-date the phylloxera epidemic, the 1994 Ermitage Le Pavillon should be purchased only by those who are willing to invest 10-12 years of cellaring. It will not reach full maturity before the end of the first decade of the next century, after which it will last for 30+ years.

Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (98-100)

The 2019 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from the Bessards lieu-dit, which is just to the west of the Le Méal, but the soils are drastically different, with the Bessards being pure broken granite soils, and in this reviewers opinion, the best terroir in the world for Syrah. Thrilling crème de cassis, gunflint, acacia flowers, violets, and spicy nuances give way to a full-bodied, powerful, yet elegant Hermitage that has incredible class in its tannins, flawless balance, and the depth and length to evolve for 30+ years.

Jeb Dunnuck (96-98)

Moving to the single vineyards, the 2019 Ermitage Les Greffieux is packed with potential, offering lots of cassis and black raspberry fruit as well as notes of bouquet garni, truffly earth, spice, and pepper. With building tannins, full-bodied richness, and a ripe, multi-dimensional texture, this powerful yet also elegant 2019 will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and cruise for 20+ years in cold cellars.

Cos d'Estournel 2016 (3x75cl)

Vinous (100)

The 2016 Cos d’Estournel was a bona fide showstopper out of barrel, the best that I had encountered in over 20 years of visiting the estate during en primeur, so my expectations were piled high when I returned to find out how it performs in bottle. Deep, almost opaque in color, it sports a very intense but broody bouquet with fathomless deep black fruit tinged with blueberry and violet. The aromas almost seem to envelop the senses. The palate is medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannin that I have never witnessed in any other vintage of Cos d’Estournel. There is a beguiling symmetry to this Saint-Estèphe, as well as unerring mineralité. The persistent, tobacco-tinged finish can be felt 60 second after the wine has departed. This is a monumental, benchmark Cos d’Estournel that will give not years but decades of pleasure, though I suspect it will close down for a period in its youth, hence my drinking window. 13.07% alcohol.

Cos d'Estournel 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97-100)

The final blend of the 2017 Cos d'Estournel is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Very deep purple-black in color, it offers up intense scents of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and black cherries with touches of incense, spice cake, star anise and plum preserves plus a perfumed hint of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with very firm yet wonderfully ripe, sweet, fine-grained tannins at just 13% alcohol—something of a miracle in our modern times. The palate sports fantastic freshness and tons of energy emitted from the intensely perfumed black fruit layers, finishing on an epically long-lingering mineral note. Truly profound.

D'Yquem 2001 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (100)

I have had the very good fortune to taste the 2001 d'Yquem perhaps a dozen times since its release and have never been less than absolutely floored by its combination of poise, purity, precision and layer upon intricate, jaw-dropping layer of flavor nuances. It is among a very small clutch of incredible wines that crash through the 100-point ceiling and rocket beyond the stratosphere! A testament to that magic that can be created when an uncommonly great vintage for Sauternes brings out the best of an extraordinary vineyard and is skillfully, sensitively crafted, the 2001 is a true wine rarity that must be tried to be believed.

D'Yquem 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (100)

Following a very long harvest stretching nearly two months, the 2015 Château d'Yquem came in at 13.9% alcohol and 144 grams per liter of residual sugar, sporting a pH of 3.65 and six grams per liter of tartaric acid. None of these numbers, however, even remotely begin to tell you how profound this wine is. The nose opens with electric notes of ripe pineapples, green mango, orange blossoms and lemon tart with hints of fungi, lime zest, crushed rocks and jasmine. The freshness on the palate is just astonishing, permeating and lifting layer upon layer of tropical fruits and earthy notions, all encased in a sumptuous texture and culminating in a very, very long, mineral-tinged finish. Truly, this is a legendary vintage for d'Yquem. I've been conservative with my drinking window here, and I would not be at all surprised if our descendants are drinking this vintage well into the next century.

At this family-owned, 26ha estate, seventh generation Alexis Depardon, at just 22, is gradually assuming charge of the domaine’s operations, currently overseeing the 3ha of Côte de Py in Morgon. He has a focus on terroir expression inherited from his parents. This cuvée is sourced from a rocky plot with blue schist soil. Rosemary George MW: Fresh red fruit aromas, and fresh on the palate with fruit and acidity in balance. Good weight and concentration. Andy Howard MW: Rounded and appealing style, lovely weight of dark berry and cherry fruit on the palate. Oak is subtle and well integrated. Freshness on the finish with acidity and a hint of graphite coming through. Fine, elegant Morgon. Dominique Vrigneau: Fresh on nose. Nice vibrant fruit in the mouth. Long clean finish and good balance. Pretty. Drinking Window 2021 - 2028

Domaine de la Charbonniere Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2018 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96+)

The quality of the Cuvée Vieilles Vignes has soared over the past 4-5 years, and while older vintages has a touch of austerity and rusticity, new releases show more balance, polished tannins, and finesse, while still showing classic old vine Grenache power. The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes (90/10 Grenache and Mourvèdre) boasts a deep purple color to go with full-bodied richness, building tannins, lots of cassis and black raspberry fruit, and complex notes of garrigue, pepper, and violets. I’d put this up with the top wines in the vintage.

Gleaming black-cherry and plum flavors pulsate through this rich, penetrating blend of Grenache (70%) and Syrah (30%) sourced from rocky limestone and marl soil. It's a dark, sultry wine offset by tangs of salty minerality and firm, gripping tannins. This vibrant red should improve through 2030 and hold further.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is serious, unwinding in the glass with scents of raspberries, cherries, woodsmoke, orange rind and petals that are framed by a deft touch of new oak. Full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's a bit more overtly structured than the domaine's Echézeaux (which preceded it in this tasting), with a tightly wound core and chalky back-end grip.

Wine Advocate (93-95+)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is serious, unwinding in the glass with scents of raspberries, cherries, woodsmoke, orange rind and petals that are framed by a deft touch of new oak. Full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's a bit more overtly structured than the domaine's Echézeaux (which preceded it in this tasting), with a tightly wound core and chalky back-end grip.

Dumien-Serrette Cornas Patou 2019 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (95-97)

Coming from pure granite soils of the Patou lieu-dit, the 2019 Cornas Patou is another brilliant wine in the making from this small family estate. Revealing a dense purple hue as well as awesome black and blue fruits, ground pepper, beef blood, and spring flower-like aromatics, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mid-palate, building yet ripe tannins, and a monster of a finish. It might need a decade to hit maturity, but it’s a phenomenal Cornas that will evolve for 20-30 years.
