Artuke Paso las Manas 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The second vintage of a vineyard at 700 meters in altitude in the village of Samaniego is the 2018 Paso Las Mañas, pure Tempranillo planted in 1990 and 2013. It fermented destemmed and with indigenous yeasts and matured in two 3,500-liter oak foudres for 12 months. This was a little closed at first and showed shy and subtle. It has an elegant and aromatic profile, in this case, possibly from the higher altitude of the vineyard. This is elegant and a little lighter than Finca de los Locos, but it still has firm tannins and a serious backbone. This feels fresher than the 2017, more delicate, more Burgundian, whereas the 2017 was more Rhône-ish. This is really very good, and it's remarkable for a young vineyard that already delivers low yields. I think that is sign of a very good place. So, when these vines get older, the wine should get even better. 6,000 bottles were filled in January 2020.

Bodegas Roda Roda I Reserva 2016 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (96)

Built around a core of Tempranillo from vineyards near Haro, with a splash of Graciano from the Rioja Oriental, this is a superb Roda I from a vintage that is often under-rated in Rioja. Balanced, perfumed and precise, with adroitly handled 50% new wood, a hint of good reduction, some vanilla spice, wild herbs and layers of blackberry and blueberry fruit. Delicious.

Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rioja Reserva 2007 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

Following the appreciation of the 2007 vintage from María José López de Heredia, the red 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is showing great, revealing unusual finesse and elegance. The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2015.

2010

Lopez Heredia Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva 2010 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96+)

The 2010 Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva was hitting on all cylinders. It was produced with 60% Garnacho (they use the masculine of the name here), 30% Tempranillo and 10% white Viura from vines averaging 91 years of age. Like all the wines, it fermented with indigenous yeasts (they have never used selected yeasts) in the 142 oak vats they have used since the beginning and then matured in old American oak barrels for four years. There is tons of complexity and nuance here; it's super elegant and layered, and as the wine sat in the glass, it developed more and more complex aromas, a subtle combination of balsam, red acid berries, a hint of medicine, fennel and wet chalk, a diesel-like touch, old wood and mushroom (beetroot?), licorice and yellow flowers, sweet spices... There's a lot more of everything. It's clean and crystalline, fresh and long, with terrific balance and depth. This has to be the finest rosado of recent times... 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2016. The Gran Reserva wines from López de Heredia come back to the market with the heralded 2001 vintage. Otherwise, when I asked them about news, the answer was "We continue making Viña Tondonia as we have always done." Basically, they are against change... From their 170 hectares of vineyards, 124 are currently in production, from which they produce around 400,000 bottles. They are the most traditional among Rioja traditionalists.

Royal Tokaji Betsek Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos 2017 (6x50cl)

Vinous (96)

The 2017 Tokaji Betsek 6-Puttonyos comes from Royal Tokaji's largest vineyard site, a crescent-shaped parcel on black volcanic soils. This has a very harmonious, Sauternes-like bouquet with orange blossom and wild peach aromas percolating through with time. The palate is poised and focused, delivering vibrant energy, a touch of spiciness on the back palate and outstanding length. This could turn out to be their finest single-vineyard release. Brilliant. 4,606 bottles produced.

Royal Tokaji Gold Label Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos 2017 (6x50cl)

Decanter (94)

Made with only Furmint, the 2017 Aszú berries were selected from some of the producer's top single vineyard sites. A more vinous nose than the Blue Label, featuring honey, apricot, marmalade and pollen, plus a tiny pinch of earthy notes. Richer and more viscous, the Gold Label has a pure and intense palate of dried apricot, acacia honey and ginger spices, with great mineral acidity (8.2g/l) to refresh the hefty residual sugar (189 g/l). Dried fruit and raisin flavours follow to the long and mellow finish.

Royal Tokaji Mezes Maly Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos 2017 (6x50cl)

Vinous (95)

The 2017 Tokaji Mézes Mály 6-Puttonyos, which comes from vines on loess soils, has a beautiful nose. Very pure but not intense, it offers scents of honeysuckle, clementine, lemon sherbet and a touch of black currant leaf, all showing wonderful definition. The palate is is very well balanced with impressive weight, but like the nose, there is a subtlety, a lightness of touch from start to finish. Elegant and poised, this is a very classy effort from one of Tokaji's most renowned sites and it will age with class. 2,665 bottles produced.

Decanter (93)

Facing south and southwest, the Nyulászó vineyard features brown and yellow clay soil. Minerality sets the tone of this 2016 dry Furmint, with struck match, ripe peaches, honeysuckle and dusty dried apricot aromas. The palate is explosive, warm and spicy, with layers of citrus, dried apricot, fig, melon and hints of white pepper, refreshed by a solid backbone of acidity. The concentrated flavours follow all the way to the lingering finish, complex and sophisticated.

2017

Royal Tokaji Nyulaszo Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos 2017 (6x50cl)

Decanter (94)

The Nyulászó (meaning a good place to catch hares) site's volcanic bedrock is overlaid with rich, brown clay, interspersed with lighter rhyolite loam. Ginger spiced fresh apricot, orange blossom, marmalade and a hint of flint on the nose. White pepper-dusted apricot and ripe persimmon, with crystallized ginger spiciness and raisin, dried apricot complexity follow through. With the highest residual sugar level (203.3 g/l) among all six 2017 Aszú releases of Royal Tokaji, Nyulászó maintained a well-lifted body, thanks to its solid varietal acidity and more layered flavour profile. Honey-glazed grapefruit gives it a moreish finish.

2017

Royal Tokaji Szt Tamas Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos 2017 (6x50cl)

Vinous (95)

The 2017 Tokaji Szt. Tamás 6-Puttonyos comes from red-clay topsoils in the commune of Mád. This is more backward compared to the Mézes Mály, and very much more citrus-driven, featuring lemon peel, orange zest and crushed stone aromas; the Aszú element is more discreet. The fresh, vibrant palate is well balanced and harmonious, offering a fine bead of acidity and candied orange peel toward the finish. Edgier than Royal Tokaji's other 2017s, and perhaps spicier on the finish, this will be fascinating to observe mature in bottle. 3,635 bottles produced.
